Video: Congratulations Nominees

Thank you for those who participated in sending in your nominations for train council. Dread and I have tallied the numbers and are ready to present to you the list that will appear on the election ballot in the next several days.

Please congratulate the following:

Some people nominated themselves, but mostly it was other people nominating themselves. To get on this list, you had to have been nominated at least three times, which you were.

[There is a long silence before Conan comes back to the conversation, his expression now set with something that might have been stubbornness and might have been worry.]

I still find that bizarre, but I won't argue about it any more.

There's something I need to talk to you about. Privately.

Any time, kid. You know I'll make time for you.

Do you have time to talk now?

Sure. I'm in my office. If you bring coffee with you, I can promise to pay attention better.

[He smirks knowing this was putting him one cup over his fiance-imposed caffeine limit. He had a thing for breaking rules, what could he say?]

Just don't let Ignis see you.

[When Conan shows up it is with two mugs of coffee. But since it was Conan making it, the coffee was ridiculously strong and bitter. ]

[Tony was just finishing clearing off the guest seat in his office for Conan when he comes in. He flashed the kid a grin and took the cup with a quick thanks.]

How've you been holding up?

[Conan sets his coffee down as he climbs up onto the guest seat.]

I've been keeping myself busy.

[And he had. But that was only a part of what he needed to talk about. ]

[Tony took a sip of the coffee and winced.]

Damn.. you trying to make motor oil?

[He settled back and took another sip. It might give him the jitters it was so strong, but he was too addicted not to drink it.]

Good. I'd assign you more homework but then I'd have to grade it. Anyway, what can I do for you?

[He is silent for a moment as he tries to decide how to start this. He didn't have a lot of experience with explaining this. Most of the few people who knew had found out on their own and he'd only needed to confirm their guess.]

I'm actually seventeen. About a year ago I was poisoned, and for some reason it did this to me instead of killing me. Peter thinks he might be able to find a cure, but we need to bring in someone who knows more of the medical side to make sure that the cure doesn't kill me.

[Apparently bluntness was the way to go. ]

[As the moment lingers, Tony feels concern growing within him over what news Conan is bringing to him. The kid was an enigma and despite the fact Tony knew he had secrets, he cared for him. Whatever this was about, he was sure it was important.

And wow, he was not wrong.]

A poison had you age down ten years?

[Give him a second on that part.]

How the hell does a poison do that? You've been living like this for a year?

Cell apoptosis. As far as I've been able to find out, the purpose of Apotoxin-4869 was to be a weapon that killed without leaving any trace behind. [He frowns unhappily, although not without some dark humor.] Except when they forced me to take it, it didn't work. Instead it reverted everything except my mind.

Maybe a little more than a year, if I count the time on the train.

[He says all of this in a very clinical and businesslike fashion.]

[That... that would be an incredibly powerful drug. There were all kinds of uses for science like that. It was hard to believe something like that was even possible. However, he knew the evidence was right in front of him.]

So, you're needing help finding a cure?

[It was the most logical conclusion as to why he was suddenly being given this information. It was a mighty big task, especially given their lack of resources but he could understand why Conan would want to be given his life back.]

Are you experiencing any other negative consequences right now? Are you in danger?

Conan shakes his head.

"Peter thinks he's on to something that could become a cure. We need someone who knows a little more about medicine and biology to check it over and make sure it doesn't kill me." Conan still didn't have a lot of faith in it. After all the disappointments it was easier not to hope too much.

"I'm always in danger," he remarks sourly. "But not because of the poison. As long as I stay as a kid it seems to leave me alone."

Well, it helps that we aren't in a hurry with this. We have time to get this right. I'm glad you told me so I can help keep you safe.

[He looked at Conan funny.]

Why are you always in danger?

"The same reason I never tell anyone unless absolutely necessary," he says bluntly. "The organization that did this to me is still out there. They believe that the poison killed me. If they ever found out that I survived..." He grimaces. "They have a policy of killing anyone with knowledge of them. And I don't know who all of the members are."

People could say that it was safe here. That he wasn't even in the same world anymore. But since arriving here, three other people from his world had shown up here. He'd been lucky that they were allies.

But the possibility existed that Gin or Vodka would be the next to arrive."

Tony nodded at that. He could understand that desire. It reminded him of a time when he'd been particularly blind and challenged someone to attack him by giving his address.

"But you realize if they show up here, not only would they not be able to do that, but they're unlikely to be allowed on the train right? All you'd need to do is point them out to me."

Conan was one of 'his people'. Those who he would go to indefinite lengths to protect and keep happy. Although being a fellow grump, that second part was a bit difficult. That didn't mean it wasn't a goal.

"And I don't know what faces they'll have. Its entirely possible that one of them is already here."

It wasn't paranoia when you were facing with a secret criminal organization of that size.

That did make things difficult, hmm. He thought about the group of people he'd interviewed lately with the questionnaires. He didn't think any of them would be suspect for this, but he could easily been given a false story.

Tobias seemed the 'secret agent' type, but he'd been there for quite a while. "Your world doesn't have unusual humans like some of these people right? No real magic or supernatural elements?"

"There are stories and legends, but up until I arrived here I was able to prove everyone one of those I encountered as hoaxes."

"Right, so the people we're talking about are people. Just people. They may have infiltrated everything and have been trained well, but they're in for a shock too when or if they show up here and find out they're vulnerable to magic." It was something he was still recovering from. His suit had been hindered on a number of these missions.

"In the end, this is up to you. We will find a way to get a cure for this, but only if you're okay with it. We can try screening everyone on the train if you can thing of anything we should be looking for and we can help you always have something to defend yourself with. So what do you want to do?"

These days Gin loomed so large in Conan's mind and memories that it was difficult to think of the organization as just anything.

"Or they show up here and immediately figure out how to take advantage of it." He had to think of the worst case scenario."

A frown, as he thought over what Tony I was asking. It was a risk. Even here on the train. But...

"It's safer for me to stay as a child. But I can't keep living like this. I want my life back, if there's even the smallest chance of it."

He wanted to be able to be called by his own name. To go back to living his own life.

"You've lived long enough in fear, kid. Peter may seem like an idiot at times, but he's damn good when he's needed. You've very powerful friends here and no one is going to hurt you while I'm alive. I give you my word." As a teenager or a child, Conan was important to Tony. He knew the boy often rolled his eyes at him and questioned his maturity, but he was someone he could count on.

"Be patient. This isn't going to be something we figure out over night. No one else is going to be told what's going on unless absolutely necessary and then with your permission."

Even with everything Tony was saying, it was going to take time for Conan to believe in it. Hope wasn't a thing he had much practice with anymore.

"It's been a year," Conan says at last. "I don't have any expectation that I will have a cure any time soon." The apotoxin had never been meant to be reversed after all.

But doing something was still better than the despair of doing nothing.

"But... thank you."
