Uh, hello? I was wondering if anyone could help me out with something. There's something I want to make, but I couldn't find any art supplies in the game room. Does anyone know if there is anything like markers and big sheets of paper anywhere?

Also! Does anyone like playing hide and go seek? Because Guilmon wants to play, but it isn't as fun with just two people.

[Takato moves to close the message, and then pauses as one more thought occurs to him.]

I guess I had one more question. I know there are people from a lot of worlds here. So I was just wondering. Do any of your worlds have Digital Worlds?

...there was a digital world, but it's gone now. I've thought about recreating it, but there's a risk.

I mean, I'm not surprised that they exist? I've been to other dimensions.

But not a Digital One, at least not yet.

I guess I'm mostly just curious. I know there are other worlds besides mine that have digital worlds. But I wonder what the other ones are like.

The heck do you mean by 'digital world'? You mean like--a type of video game? Or, oh hey yeah, virtual reality?

[ He thinks a moment on how to tell this story in a kid-friendly way. ]

My stepfather was...an evil man. The digital world was his creation, and he planned to use it to take over the internet and hijack peoples' bodies. My stepbrother was there too, originally conspiring with him...but my brother helped him break out, and my stepbrother sacrificed himself to keep my stepfather from escaping.

I've built similar, less potent tech to keep the same thing from happening again...but a full-scale world is too dangerous.

Would you be playing on the whole train, or limiting it to certain carriages? I'll play. There's no digital world in my world.

[ The mandibles retract, revealing Ken holding onto Wormmon. For a moment, the young man's expression gets sheepish, and there's a flash of the shy eleven-year-old boy again. ]

I've never played hide-and-seek before.

[ The only person around to play with never wanted to play, growing up. And even that person.....stopped being there.

Wormmon is staring at Ken in guilty horror. He didn't know. Such a terrible thing about Ken-chan, and he didn't know!!

[Never played hide and seek? That was awful and needed to be fixed right away.]

My Digital World is huge, and looked very different in the different parts. But the top layer, the one that was closest to the Real World, that looked like a desert. There was spare data that was being blown around by the wind, and in the sky above you could see the real world's network, and beams of light where data was being transferred to it. And there wasn't a sunset or sunrise. All the lights just suddenly went out at once.

[Takato shakes his head.]

Maybe a little? But in my world, there was a world that grew out of the network. Everything there was made of data. And there were living creatures made out of data who lived there too.

[He peers a little at the video, curious about the little white creature. ]

I'm not sure. I guess it depends on how many people want to play.

I'm sorry. That sounds awful. [If they were in the same room, Takato would have been tempted to give him a hug.]

But.. Its a little amazing that someone was able to create a digital world. Were there living creatures there too?

[Nita looks... genuinely surprised.]

That's a lot more detail on the layers than I'd have expected.

But the lights just going out makes sense, doesn't it? If the input's a rendering of zeros and ones, there's not an in-between value.

[He's trying to figure out what the kid means. Wasn't that just what...video games and computer programs were? A whole bunch of data and code turned into a pretty picture and an interface easy to use?]

I mean, virtual reality looks pretty real. You can even get feel pain in the training simulators... Are you saying something like that grew out of control and made itself a larger world than intended?

["Grew out of the network" was his best clue. Reno wasn't sure if he was reading into the phrasing right though. What was this kid into?

As for the creature, it manages to get its nose up over the terminal again as Reno gets distracted by the conversation.]

It was made out of data, like virtual reality. But everything there, it was all real. Just as real as my world. And the digimon who lived there. They're not just programs. They're every bit as real and alive as humans are.

Well...

[ Would he? Ken gives the offer sincere thought. Hide-and-seek. He thinks he understands the theory, though he can't say his increased height would do him any favors, effectiveness-wise...

But it doesn't sound like they have much to do between mission stops. And hide and seek is a game where you have to be fully in the moment, isn't it? You have to notice things. The moments draw out. And when you add to that how happy it would make the Digimon... ]

I guess so? I don't really know a lot about why it was like that.

It's a game! One person has to count while everyone else finds a good hiding spot. And then they have to go find everyone. The person that gets found last wins.

... Why would you play that?

Yeah, okay, kid. I'm not getting it. Virtual reality just feels real, looks real, even the monsters and people are programmed to act real. Whole point of it, right?

I mean, if you had an AI and stuck it in a robot and...well, that's still a program on the inside but it's...real on the outside? I guess...

[Crap, now he's doing it. This is complicated. Way more complicated than he liked for a simple chat.]
