[ He's just a simple commander, and he shouldn't even be that! He was field promoted out of necessity! He'd been trying to give it back before he ended up in this place. ]

Yes, but you've had some training, did you not? We do not truly have military schools where I am from, though I imagine they may have them in Garlemald...

So I am not certain about these 'qualifications'. I believe we're all doing the best we can, are we not?
