poi 16, library; video
Hey guys! [ As soon as the video feed cuts in, so does Tidus's voice, a smile and a hand raised to the screen. He's by one of the tables, breaking the 'be quiet' rule of all library spaces for a good reason - the reason which is spread out on a table, showing a selection of bottles, equipment, and even plants - one of which glows a soft gold. ]
Welcome to the newbies! I wanted to talk some about the healing we've got for people to take when they need it - plus, there's some making I was thinking some of you might be interested in - these!
[ He's grabbing a small pouch, removing the contents, and bringing a view of small green sweets sitting on his palm. ]
They're candies made from the plants we've got here. [ He nods back, and still in view is the golden plant, as well as less glowy variant. ] We've got a bunch growing, and they can be made into salves too - they're from Roland's world, and he got a book that tells you how to make them! But-
[ But- Tidus chuckles. ]
Well I've never made them before, and Roland hasn't either! Sooo... I was figuring we've got enough people here who're good at making with herbs and in the kitchen - how about we figure it out? Give people more options for healing. Then we don't have to pay for 'em. [ Heheh! ]
There's plenty of the plants in the greenhouse if you wanna try on your own - thanks, Persephone! - and the book on them's in the library. I'm gonna put some of these [ he holds the sweets back up, while also putting them back in the bag ] into the supply locker, so you can check them out. Try making them whenever you want!
[ He can't figure out the tie right now, or it's just a little too distracting. But Tidus is quiet, before he looks up from the pouch to the screen, and then to the side. His tone shifts. ]
And... if you ever worry about taking supplies when other people need them, don't, okay? Carry them with you. If you need to know how they work or just wanna ask about them, you can. And you can ask people to buy what works where you're from too. A bunch of the potions we have - they saved me more times than I can count back home. And I know Trunks swears by senzu beans.
So - yeah. [ He pulls a smile, small as it's turned. ] Drop by the library if you want! I've got an alphabet to count 'til it sticks.
[ Heh. ]

[ Heh. ]

(...that last one sounds better.)
But whatever, not as important as returning back on topic: ] But, great! Nell and Soldat sound ready to give them a go. Otoha too! We can take a swing at it - I'll even help if stuff needs mashing up.
[ Sounds like it might? He doesn't mind working on that. ]
You got time to head down here by the way? I grabbed some other stuff I wanna show you.
-> Action
[But that is a group of people, and Ryo furrows his brow a bit.]
Should we set up somewhere else, in case someone wants to use the library?
[Don't! Be noisy! In the library!]
Of course - I'll be there soon.
[And true to his word he is, heading into the library only a few minutes later. Transgates are very convenient now that he's got the hang of them.]
Tidus?
no subject
[ pah force him to move! FORCE HIM TO DO HIS PAPERWORK!!! And not to be a gremlin in the library. huff puff can't make him move Ryo, do you know what a pain this was to set out!
(In that he had to set it out at all.)
But Tidus is easy to find. He's taken station down in the bottom floor library at one of the bigger tables, currently in the middle of going through a suitcase he's added to the collection. ]
'Sup. [ But he stops to nod at Ryo, then down at the suitcase. ] Come here - I got some powder for the incense we burned after everyone was feeling terrible that time. You know, that big sleepover in the gym? It's actually for helping you use your magic again.
[ There's a few things in the suitcase: bottles of green liquid, bags of powder (said incense -- not cocaine, we swear officer), and two smaller bags, with one of them glowing a soft red.
Someone has been shopping, and his name's Tidus. ]
I was thinking it'd be good for healers who stick in place. People can take them too, but - if you're together and burning 'em, then they should work for everyone around, right?
[ Right? Maybe? ]
no subject
[It's a small reprimand, but affectionate. If 'lovable scamp' were a phrase in Ryo's vocabulary, it's what he'd be calling Tidus. Now do your paperwork. It helps everyone else.]
[He heads over when nodded at and takes a look in the suitcase. Everything looks familiar - as far as Ryo can tell, these are all things he's inventoried in the past, though he'd proven a few days ago that he definitely doesn't remember all of them. Something to work on.]
I think so? I mean-
[He fishes into his satchel and removes one of the scanners, offering it to Tidus.]
We could always find out.
no subject
But paperwork is a future Tidus problem. For now, the current Tidus problem is the scanner that Ryo holds out to him.
Um. ]
...You know how to use it? I mean, I asked if we could take a few, but...
[ He will hold out a hand to take it if Ryo is certain (Tidus is very good at button bashing), but he'll also give the guy a chance to do it himself. ]
I used what the big shots told us. The few times I patched people up.
[ The refugees, anyway. ]
no subject
[But the issue at hand is the scanner, and Ryo recognizes that hesitance; he's usually the one wearing it when presented with a new technology, so it's a little odd to see it on Tidus.]
I do, yes.
[He shows Tidus the scanner - one button, two lights (green and red), very simple as far as he can tell - then points it at the incense and holds the button down. The scanner beeps, and the green light lights up; he then points it at himself and holds the button, and it beeps again, green light lighting up again.]
So that should work on me; if it wouldn't, the red light would've lit up.
[Super easy. Barely an inconvenience.]
no subject
His expression only becomes a tad curious watching Ryo work the scanner, a face akin to an unsure dog when the lights go off, but then perking to hearing positive words. A smile, eyebrows lifting. ]
Okay - cool! [ Coolcoolcool. He picks up one of the bags, not such big things, but plenty enough. Turns it in his hand just because he can. ] We've got jars we can put 'em in. --Oh yeah, and I got more of these, too. You got anything for getting people back on their feet if they nearly die where you're from? These saved my life plenty of times - you should hold onto some.
[ He's rambling a bit, maybe, in a kind of zone where he at least knows what does what and how good, to some degree. Moving onto the rolled up paper bags, one glowing, the other not; and it's the latter he opens up first, pulls out a few white feathers carefully. ]
Phoenix feathers. Yuna had a spell too that'd save us like them.
[ From death. More than the normal healing, from that close of a brink. That's probably normal with all these people from their drastic worlds. ]
no subject
[He raises an eyebrow at Tidus's question, and because he can't not do it:]
I do, actually. It's called me.
[On the one hand, it was a legitimate question from Tidus. On the other hand, he couldn't help himself.]
[...he does owe Tidus an explanation, though.]
The only magical healing on my world comes from healers. We have medicine, but it's not magic.
...you have phoenixes in your world?
[Is his the only world that doesn't?]
no subject
But to the question about phoenixes, he shrugs. ]
Couldn't tell you. I guess? We just buy 'em like this; I've never seen the creature they're from. [ He's about to hold out the feather, then decides to get four more out, and offering those. ] If they're actually magic and we just use that word, I wouldn't know. They work - that's good enough for me!
[ This is his level of knowledge. Does it work? Great, no more questions. But he is opening up the other paper parcel now, bringing out a rather glowing jewel. ]
This is some kind of phoenix thing too. Not from my world, but Roland said they're really strong, so I got them.
[ Welcome to the Phoenix Corner today, Ryo. ]
no subject
[But that's making assumptions about a completely different world, and he tables it for now. He takes the feathers and lays them out on the table; he's going to need to rearrange things in his bag to fit everything in, and now isn't exactly the time for that. Both eyebrows go up as Tidus presents the jewel.]
What is it?
no subject
He's got a few of these in Purple's supplies - or, kinda the same, but different? But they sounded like the feathers, soo...I bought them. [ Simple as, even if he's realising now, he really should ask more questions, huh. But there's another direction his thoughts go, looking at the jewel in his hand. ]
We never had anything like this either, in Zanarkand. [ He glances at Ryo. ] Where I'm from. Magic... it's funny. You heard about it in stories, but it wasn't anything real. Not until I left - then I learned a lot about the world. What it was actually like.
[ Hm. He puts the jewel down, feeling awkward holding it. ] When you don't have things like this around, you're not used to taking them. I mean-- 'a feather or jewel that can save you from dying'. Right?
[ He laughs, an implication of how crazy is that? Just like a bean that can help you back up, or a weird beating heart that you just press inside you to give you more vitality. ]
no subject
[It's not a judgment; he's honestly a bit mystified by the whole thing. He hasn't been able to buy some things even when he knows exactly what he wants, and yet Tidus could get these? How does the train shop actually work?]
[But that's evidently not where Tidus wants to go in this conversation, and he listens as Tidus continues, talking about home. He'd known Tidus had lived on a boat, and that at some point there had been travel and a battle; he kind of figures that learning about the world includes the latter. He hadn't really known what the world was like himself until he'd left Eloe, after all.]
[He nods, and that laugh is met with a sympathetic smile.]
Right. It's...hard to get into the habit.
[Case in point: caring for a pair of sun-mangled gods at the end of the previous mission. He won't be forgetting that anytime soon.]
no subject
The guy had been confused than in agreement, and Inigo had been the same too. 'You don't get the luxury of having anything but what you can get'. He'd said something like that; and Inigo had always been the same, in a way.
Why do you care?
But he decides he'll answer Ryo's curiosity, bringing out from his arms band the other jewels that he has - appearing in a closed fist, and he sets one down and another. ]
I know what they do, [ technically, ] and I just asked Roland to describe them to me in detail when I stuck them into the shop. [ And it seemed to work, so-? ]
But, I never used them myself. [ ... ] I'm no different, [ he admits after a beat. ] --I stick with what I'm used to.
But if there's a chance a feather doesn't work... I want us to be covered, you know? Like Trunks's senzu beans, or the bandages that patch you up without magic. I got worried after what you said about your magic not working.
[ About the gods, and his mouth pinches, brow lowering. ]
no subject
[And then Tidus admits that he has the same problem as the rest of them, and that smile is back. He's not perfect, and neither is Tidus, and neither is anyone else on this train - they're all creatures of habit, and changing habits is hard, but they're still doing their best. Being corrected feels terrible (and it's even worse in tandem with his anxiety), but Tidus can correct him without making him feel small. He can't help but feel grateful for that.]
I know. And...I honestly don't know if it would work on a god, but I don't want to try it - if it doesn't, then trying to connect could kill us both. I don't want to risk it if there are other options available.
[And given the contents of the table and the suitcase, there are definitely other options available.]
no subject
What do you do? You can't just cast the spell from a distance?
[ He gestures to the space between them, as meagre as it is. ]
no subject
No - my magic requires skin contact. I connect my life to my patient's and use it to heal them. It doesn't hurt me normally, but if the connection is broken or I try to help someone who's too far gone, it could kill us both.
[Very powerful but very delicate.]
So like I said, trying it on a god is risky, and I don't want to try it when there are other ways I can heal them.
[And now Tidus has a slightly more detailed explanation as to why Ryo didn't try his magic on Zagreus after the mission.]
no subject
[ Dangerous! Killing them both? It's an explanation that delivers a shudder for Tidus to even think about. ]
I should be able to heal people with some space, but it's easier if I can get near them, or touch them too. [ It's not really relevant to anything more than 'just healing' talk, and Tidus not being so afraid to admit - despite the still sheepish way he explains - his inadequacies. Hand held out like he's touching some invisible limb. ]
Everything about magic's there is learning to turn energy into it - into the spell you want to do. It took ages to get it, but I'd think about the way Yuna did it; watching her patch people up like it's nothing, how strong she had to be doing that. Just wiping away those wounds like they weren't there, making my bruises go without breaking a sweat.
...even tiny cuts would wipe me out at the start. [ Embarrassing! ] But when I think about her... it's the only way I can do it. Even now.
[ 'She's what it means to heal.'
(Does he sound awed? Because yes, he is.) ]
no subject
[It's mild, with no reprimand - just a reminder. Different perspectives.]
[But Tidus continues, and...he's mentioned Yuna before, someone from home that he cares about - quite a bit, if the way he's talking about it is any indication. He reaches for the hand Tidus is holding out and takes it gently in his.]
She sounds like an incredible person.
no subject
Instead, he's surprised by the touch to his hand, an unexpected gesture. Embarrassing, and it shows on his face, a shy way his gaze flits away but doesn't know where to settle; the way his head tilts, in his voice and its chuckle. ]
Yeah. Sorry, I know I'm rambling. [ Oooh boy. He looks back to the table, then gently pulls his hand back. ] Okay, why don't I show you everything? I know what's from my world and most worlds. Everything we got's mostly from Spira or Evermore. Those bacta patches, the square ones? They're from the same side of the void as Leia's from, so she's been restocking those.
[ He moves as he speaks, taking a seat with one free for Ryo. Might as well be comfortable, right? And he'll start to make appear from the arms band a different array of bottles and trimmings. ]
I don't know what goes into them, but I got some books. So if you wanna know-
[ 'You know where to look,' he leaves unsaid. ]
no subject
You're not rambling. It's fine.
[But he lets it go and turns his attention back to the supplies on the table, sitting when Tidus sits.]
Are they in here, or in medical?
[Better to make sure than assume.]
no subject
[ He trusts that guy to. He told him about them, so.
In the meantime, Tidus looks around the table for something...specific. Makes a small sound when he notices it, and he needs to really reach over, stand up to pick up a vial and small pouch, and bring it to their side. ]
This! We just called them remedies in Spira. [ The vial is a small one, a misty white, and the pouch has purplish tablets. ] You break them up in water, and they got rid of a bunch of horrible stuff fiends would put on you. Magic, poisoning, turning you to stone- you just have to pour it out on someone if they're stone.
[ He makes a motion, like a salter shaker. You know. Things you should know. ]
no subject
[He files that bit of info away for later. That Senku would know what's in medical and how to use it also tracks - it's Senku, after all.]
[He notes what the remedies do, too, but not without a slightly concerned look.]
Does that happen a lot where you're from?
[This is like the third time Tidus has mentioned people getting turned into stone and it's starting to get worrying.]
no subject
[ He makes a motion over his eyes. ]
Some of those fiends even made us hurt if we got a healing spell! It was seriously a pain. [ Ugh. ] Just thinking about it... everything was trying to blow me up.
[ He looks so annoyed. ]
no subject
Are those kinds of fiends normal? Did that happen to everyone who traveled, or were you just unlucky?
no subject
[ He's trying to think back on Spira, gaze to the side. ]
The towns and cities had these Crusader guys that'd keep an eye over the place and push back fiends or Sin, and the church had some of their own people too. But... I remember a few people saying it was dangerous those days. [ He looks back at Ryo, getting his head more around the situation. ] Wherever people died without being Sent, there'd be fiends. Some of the toughest places we went were like that.
If you go somewhere and no one's around to send you, you'll turn into a fiend. [ He lets out a breath, shoulders lifting. ] Spira was always like that... just death, everywhere.
