Since missions seem to come around every month, I wanted to get this out of the way before we end up on some strange new place, but after the train picked up new passengers.

I want to talk magic. And I don't mean everyone's weird powers, but the sort where you learn and cast spells. Because it occurs to me that it might be possible for one person to replicate another world's spells using their own magical framework. Well, not impossible. Worth testing.

If that's interesting to you, I'll be in the library for most of today, but I can hear the ICP. Might help to hash out the theory before we experiment.

Also, it might be worth discussing what limits there are on magic. I know what sorcerers in my world consider difficult problems, but not if those are universal.

I have a particular interest in magic used to transform. It's not something I've had much luck with in my own world.

Magic that calls on the five elements. So, earth, air, fire, water and the astral plane.

The astral plane counts as one? I figured that sounded like something else completely.

Because it is a place, just like the elements are part of the normal world. It makes it distinct from black magic and holy magic.

Can you explain how to me. I am admittedly curious after all.

Shamanism draws on the energy from the place. The physical parts of the world are made of earth, air, fire and water, but the astral plane is also part of the world, and so you can draw on it using spirit shamanism. Holy magic and black magic both draw on powerful beings, rather than a place. All of that is shaped by the nature of the power you draw on -- there's a reason a spell uses a certain sort of power.

Oh wow. So it's basically drawing energy from them in order to use the power? Sounds pretty powerful, plus in a way feels like it gives you a connection to the elements to.

The power depends on the caster; people can only carry so much power in them at one time. It doesn't matter if you have access to a lake or an entire ocean if you have to move water one bucket at a time, so to speak.

I think I am understanding what you mean at least. Magic from other worlds certainly is interesting.

Of course. And I'm more likely to be able to show examples on missions. I don't trust doing combat magic on the train, no matter the precautions.
