[Rich is standing in front of the monitor in the music room, hands on his hips, looking very stern and serious... but then he smirks.]

Have you ever gotten ads online promising hot bisexual singles in your area?

It's me. I'm the hot bisexual single in your area. Just thought you all needed to know I am currently on the market.

Please field all date inquiries to my mailbox. Or my sleeper car, whatever. I'm rooming with Alice, but we are not an item.

[She would pretty much laugh in his face if he even implied they were.]

[It's a relief that Alice takes his affection in stride now, instead of getting flustered. It makes it just a little less awkward, even allowing Rich to laugh softly at her very serious question.]

Crap, I forgot you aren't familiar with computers. There's this thing you can access on computers called the internet. It's like this network of information and entertainment... pretty much anything you can imagine, it's on there. In my time, now, you can find a lot of stuff 'online', including advertisements. Like you'd see on TV or in the paper, but online, they can be a little more risque. A lot of them promise you attractive people to date or just pictures of them to stare at.

[irrationally]

[ There's a brief pause.

Alice probably needs a moment to process all of this. It's very wild. ]

Is it difficult for people in your world to meet attractive people on the street? [ After all, why else would they have to use those odd computers to find people like that! ]

[firewalled]

I think it kind of depends? Some people are good at it, but a lot of people are shy or unsure of themselves. Or if you live in a small town, you might feel like there's no one cute nearby. Or you can be some creepy basement dweller who won't leave the house and blames everyone else besides himself for not getting laid.

[Whoops, he's getting into slang again. He laughs a little nervously.]

That sounds complicated.

[ Maybe it's not the best answer, but at least she's not calling him out on that slightly nervous laugh either. It's just what it genuinely seems like to her - not just because of the way he explains it, but also since Alice is so generally unconcerned with finding attractive people. ]

.. does that mean you are also looking for someone attractive? [ He did say he was on the market. ] Look-wise, I mean.

It kind of is. There's a lot of factors when it comes to finding love. It doesn't often happen like it does in movies or books, where you just bump into a cute person and literally sweep them off their feet.

[The question makes him flush, but he shrugs.]

Sort of? But what I find attractive is subjective, and it's more important to me that it's someone who's a good person first.

[irrationally]

[ Alice seems to consider this for a moment. Finding a good person on the train shouldn't be too hard, but.. ]

But isn't there a little more to liking someone? [ Probably, anyway. She certainly isn't the expert when it comes to this. ] You can't like someone in that sort of way instantly just because they are a good person, right?

[firewalled]

I mean, yeah, of course there's more to it. I know there is something more to it, but I don't know if I can put my finger on it. I guess if they make me happy... if they like flirting with me and I find them cute... I guess if I know they're a good person, I don't feel bad about being attracted to them, and I figure it out from there.

[Sometimes kindness makes someone more attractive too, but explaining that might go worse than just explaining attracting in general.]

Hm.. I think I understand.

[ 'Think', mostly, since it all still seems so odd to her. It's more about understanding it on a conceptual level now than on a personal level.

But what she does know she wants to say is just: ]

.. Good luck with it, Rich. I am fairly sure you will find someone. [ He's a kind person who can make others happy, after all. Surely someone out there has to be attracted to that. ]

[Rich gives her a soft smile, a little embarrassed by her encouragement.]

That's nice of you to say, Alice. I don't know if I'll be that lucky, but I'm trying my best, I guess.

[And hey! He did get one date, even if it was pretty much a pity date. Maybe that will turn into something a little more than obligation and kindness.]
