[ della has a slightly serious look on her face... but for those who know her, there's definite playfulness in her eyes. ]
This is one of those "I can't believe I have to say this" kind of deals, so buckle up, folks.
Guys? I know I'm really amazing, very cool, and all around unbelievable. I'm so many things, it's hard to list them all. But one thing I'm not?
A deity. Yes, I am in fact, 100%, absolutely and truly not a goddess. And no, I'm not a demi-goddess either. Not a single trace of divinity in me. I won't name names, but this has happened about three or four times now. Just thought I'd mention it in case there's anyone else out there with this assumption.
... Y'know what? It's a new month, and that means we're getting newbies. Maybe now's a good time for everyone to sweep any other misunderstandings under the rug. So, if there's anything you wanna clear up about yourself, your world, your species, whatever, go for it.

[ Aside from what she saw in the illusion. ]

[ He's not sure if the arrangement came about purely from his domain or by some agreement between Mother Nyx and Lord Hades as part of divine politics. He simply understood it as his duty. ]

And you.. didn't mind?
[ Especially since he says that he has since he was 'small'. He might not have had much of a choice back then. ]

[ He never had a choice. Then and now. ]

[ Says the most opinionated person ever over here. ]
Even moreso if you weren't given a choice. [ Which this definitely sounds like. ]

[ He couldn't stop and demand anything different without causing many to suffer. He's not cruel. ]

[ At least her voice doesn't sound aggressive. Instead there's more something else in it. Something curious, almost pleading.
Thanatos has seemed like a good person. Why should he be stuck with something without an option? ]
Can't you ask for anything to change?
no subject
Even if Lord Hades somehow granted my request, what could I change? Become an independent contractor doing the same job? I hardly see how that would be better.

[ Two words that matter more to Alice than any other, considering everything she's been through. ]
Your life shouldn't be about something that was imposed on you. No one's life ought to be. It should be about making your own decisions. And if you want to do what you are already doing-- then that's fine.
[ Look, Alice isn't going to judge anyone's hobbies.
.. or most people's hobbies, at least. ]
But it should always be your own choice in the end. Otherwise we are little more than slaves.

[ He doesn't say it, but he thinks of Demeter, Goddess of the Seasons. It's her choice to cast the world into years and years of winter. It is her choice to not do her job, and how many are dying and suffering because of it? How many people has Thanatos cut down because she decided to not change the seasons? ]
I'm a god. I cannot so simply throw away my responsibility to my domain. If that makes me a slave by your standards, then I am.
no subject
That's still you choosing out of a sense of responsibility then.
[ Even if it's not entirely fair. ]
If there is a god in my world, or multiple gods, then they are actively choosing to abandon their duty and let people suffer. I've never been helped by one.
[ So it is an option. Not that she's saying he should take it - but she's just saying there are gods who made a different choice than him. There's still some free will involved, just in him choosing to adhere to his duty all the same. ]

I can't speak for them, but I have known gods who do just that.
[ And he can't fathom how they could do that. ]

[ After all, Alice has found that Thanatos is much nicer than he may initially seem. She wouldn't be surprised if that was his reason. ]

[ Animals? Alice would think there's no need to make the separation, but then again, Thanatos is pretty fond of Mort.. Even though she isn't sure whether to classify Mort as an animal exactly. ]

[ Welcome to existential horror time with Thanatos? ]

[ Like he's speaking in riddles! Come on, how is that a direct answer to her question? Why do people love making her think so much? ]
Wouldn't things just live on forever without death?
cw: major death themes/existential horror
Yes, but mortals never think how they will live on forever. Old age does not stop. They continue to grow old and frail. Illness doesn't stop. The gravely ill suffer endlessly. Battles don't stop, and those with horrible injuries find no relief from pain. Hunger runs rampant because hunters cannot kill for food. They are trapped in the eternal cold, frozen alive under the snow. The lives of everyone becomes increasingly worse past a point that is sustainable for anyone.
Need I continue?
no subject
Though she doesn't comment on that. ]
Though there are plenty of people with horrible injuries who still live all the same.
no subject
That is still too shortsighted, even for those people.
