Ho, fellow travelers of the Voidtrecker Express. I hope you are all enjoying some apparently well earned rest. I am 10 Vigilant Gaze Purges The Horizon, or if you'd rather, just Vigilant Gaze. I am an angel.

My time here has shown me things I did not think were possible, and that the world is far more vast and incomprehensible than I imagined. It has been a humbling experience. The biggest thing I have learned, is that the word "angel" does not always mean the same thing. I had thought my kind were a universal constant.

And so, I find myself compelled to ask about angels. What do you think of, when you hear that word? Does it even mean anything to you?

... Buddy, I've got so many question of my own to ask.

But, uh, yeah! In my world, we usually think of them as some perfect beings from on high with wings and halos and watching over us. Never actually seen one yet, just stuff of legend so far.

More often heard of than seen, hm? Well, I do have wings and a halo, but I don't know if I would say I am a perfect being.

I should hope not! Perfect beings are boring. We're all way more exciting with our flaws.

There has only been one perfect being, by my understanding, and they ended their own life out of boredom.

But we shouldn't have to worry about that being a problem here. I think even perfect beings would find lots of imperfections here on the train!

Indeed so. Some of my brothers think that life itself is imperfect and needs to be "fixed". I do my best to keep them from doing anything they'll regret when they're thinking clearly again.

Well, on behalf of all us non-angels, we thank you a whole lot, Gaze.

So what else would you like to know? I'd be happy to tell you anything about my world, since you're doing the same.

Since you're asking, why don't you tell me about your home. Just, in general. Where did you come from? I have been to many worlds, but there are many man more.

Born and raised in Duckburg, my friend! We get the occasional super-villain, magical disaster, and ancient-ruin-driven-weather, but most of my fun is spent exploring the world with my family.

[He nods along at this as if it all makes perfect sense. Super villains, magical disasters, and ancient ruin driven weather are all things any sensible person would worry about, right?]

And Duckburg is not under the rule of one of the Seven, or aware of the Red City of Throne?

Considering I've never heard of either of those things before, gunna have to say "nope."

The Seven are not subtle. You would know if any of them were in your home world.

Which means you are either from a world who's gate has yet to be opened, or you aren't from the Great Wheel at all.

Again, no clue what you're saying. Time for you to do some info-dumping, pal.

Very well, I shall give some background.

[Just remember, Della. You asked for this.]

The first commandment of YISUN was "Let there be no genesis."

YISUN was not created, for they always were. They were the ultimate being, the master of all stories and worlds and universes. They have never had and never will have an equal.

But YISUN was miserable, for they were alone. Imagine, Della, having infinite stories to tell, and no one to tell them to. So YISUN committed deicide and cut themselves in half.

From the division was birthed UN, lord of all that is not and master of empty places, and YIS, lady of all that is and master of the rampant flame.

For the first time in the history of creation, they were not alone, and they took it poorly. Horrified, YIS and UN made war on each other for seven years. Then, they made love for seven hours, and gave birth to 777,777 gods, in black and white.

The gods raised a mighty city of iron and red stone, and called in Throne.

And when the gods tired of fighting and loving and being with each other and hungered for more, they crafted the four orders of inheritors. The Servants and the Angels, just to start. Later, came Mortals and Devils, by accident.

The gods were pleased by their creations for a while longer, but eventually they tired of us too, and moved on to their next phase of being. Each god walked to the edge of Throne and faced outwards. Each god told a story, and their voice became a burning thread, and at the end of the thread an entire universe. 777,777 gods. 777,777 worlds. And Throne in the center, a mausoleum that me and my brothers stood watch over.

The gods had died, you see. Or passed on to some greater form that beings like you and I cannot comprehend, but they had no more need of their physical bodies anymore, at the very least.

Throne remained still for...I'm not sure. A very long time, in any case. Until the firmament was breached by a mortal man. Zoss, the Conquering King, broke into Throne, hoping to speak with the creator only to find that his creator was long dead. So he did battle with me and my brothers and...I am embarrassed to admit he won. Zoss was an extremely powerful man.

After he breached the way, others from other worlds started following in his footsteps, and these mortals who claimed the power of gods became known as the Demiurges. But the Demiurges allowed us to return, still serving the new law, and for a while it was good.

But mortal beings are known for their strong power of desire. The peace did not last. Eventually the Demiurges turned on each other and made war. A mad war, where mortals used the power of gods as they might an sharpened rock and bashed each other's skulls in, devouring each other's power like wild dogs.

In the end, seven Demiurges remained. They made a pact. It isn't peace, but it is a balance, of sorts. And so the seven Demiurges became the seven gods of the new world. Each one the ruler of 111,111 worlds.

They focus all their energy on watching each other, and so the dream of peace is a long forgotten one as great criminal syndicates have largely taken over the day to day ruling of Throne and grown rich and fat on the ruins of the gods while scampering to avoid the notice of the Seven.

Me and my brothers have done what we can to preserve the law and protect the innocent, but we are few in number and cannot be everywhere. Many of us have started to question whether mortal kind is worthy of our protection, or if we should seek to bring about the end and wait for a new world.

But I stand true to my oath, both to the gods and to the Demiurges, to uphold the law and protect the works of those who created me.

And now I am here, on this train, somewhere beyond the Great Wheel. I did not think there WAS anything beyond the Wheel.

[ She kinda wishes she had popcorn during the story. Or a notebook to jot down and keep track. But, if he is well and truly done, have some applause! ]

... Well! That was. A lot. But an interesting lot.

You should write that down, I think it'd make some pretty good fireplace-reading.

There are many accounts much more detailed and well put than mine in Throne. If I had one, I would lend it to you.

Hey, don't put yourself down. How do you know your version wouldn't be as good if you don't try?
