grasshopper 19, video to all from the gymnasium
'Sup everyone, how's it going? Got a more fun proposal than I last time I was here. [ A grin. ]
So I've been thinking we could run some sports groups! The gym's emptier these days with the training one used for all the fighting and magic classes, and it's going to waste! I don't know all the games they have the equipment for here, but there's a few I've been practising, and I figure we can spend a few days seeing what everyone likes and setting up different times people can come in and have a go.
I got a few friends to help out show some off: volleyball, badminton, tennis. Been practising basketball too. But if there's any you know and want people to get involved with, let's do it! Let's get some partners and have fun. There's hoops and nets gathering dust here.
I'm thinking we could do something around after lunchtime for the next few days, but I'll let you guys know the times for sure later. There's instructions on the ICP too if we wanna try something new once in a while, so come and check 'em out--I can even show you a few games now!
( OOC post about this here! )

That's correct, but I'll explain more on horses later. Maybe there'll be something in the library. [ Roland shakes his head. ] It's just a saying, but what it really means is do-you-want-to-throw-the-ball?
[ ....What animals from his home world did Tidus know about? He'd have to probe this later. ]
no subject
Sure! Though, you know anything about soccer? I got a kid interested in it. Then I know Minako's gonna be all for volleyball. You gotta tell me how it feels being so young again!
[ And there's the cheek that Roland thought he was pulling before. ...but also, he is curious.... ]
no subject
Ha ha. Still up for that career change? Get an open mic night on the train and throw your jokes there. [ He resists a smirk. ]
And as a matter of fact, I do know both. Handled them both as required sports when I was still a student. Where do I come in then, coach? [ Sassing you right back in 3, 2, 1... ] I'm leaving if you're going to make me count balls.
no subject
Actually, I want you to show Inigo some moves! He's got the time-- guy doesn't do anything, unless he's just hiding his hobbies from me.
Do you know if you need a full team set-up to play?
no subject
[ He relaxes at the mention of Inigo, and getting right down to business. ] Hey, that sounds like fun. Maybe we could introduce him to a new hobby, then. For volleyball, you'll probably need at least four people to make it interesting. Otherwise, it's just a back and forth between two people with no teamwork involved. For soccer, it's mostly the same. Get around six or seven people for that one. [ He looks up in thought. ] As long as you've got 2 goal keepers for each team, I think we can work with any number.
[ ....YOU MADE HIM COUNT. ]
no subject
...I can't tell if you did that on purpose or what. [ But Tidus is smirking anyway, amused to hear it all. ] But alright. I mean, picking games that two people can play is good too--so people can go and get a friend involved when we don't have the bigger meet ups. That's my goal: showing something new, giving people some fun to have with each other.
[ He shrugs a shoulder. ] It's not like we're gonna be able to get any games going. Not unless everyone discovers they like sports.
[ Tidus would be into that. ]
no subject
That sounds like a win to me, if you manage to turn this whole train into a sports team. A lot safer than going down planets every two weeks, too. [ Alas. There were people to save; cities to rescue... ] And two people is really all you need. Look, we played catch with the football, just you and me. If we had the space, I would have shown you how to hike it too.
no subject
[ An intense workout? He's kidding, but he's got to have something to say with all these weird terms! ]
no subject
no subject
[ He'll spread out his arms with that like a challenge, and a yellow tennis can be caught in one of his hands.
Come at him with your ball 'hiking', old man! ]
< action >
He looks like he belongs in places like this, indeed. Ever the sportsman, ever the athlete. ]
Hard at work I see, coach. [ He passes Tidus with a smile before he makes his way to the familiar pile of equipment. The football sticks out like a sore thumb, so it doesn't take him long to find it. ] Ready for catch part two, with a hint of rules?
no subject
Seeing who it is, Tidus easily resumes to bounce the ball aimlessly, even as the comment is made. ]
Sure. Rules, those're your favourite, right? [ He catches the ball one last time and begins a slow lazy walk over to Roland. ] How more complicated can a game where you chuck the ball around get?
no subject
Styles aside, he shakes his head in amusement, readying himself in a spot around the gym that had as much space as he can afford to take up for the impromptu lesson. He walks to that spot, knowing Tidus will follow, and it's near the end of the narrow lane, where there's visibility for the breadth of the room. The ball in his hands is also thrown up and down, like a practiced warm up. ]
Yeah, yeah. Right up there with counting and taking down notes. [ He starts stretching, left arm over the other. ] Not that complicated, actually. If you watch a full game, it's more intense than what we're doing. But right now, all you need to know is how to hike. You're gonna be a quarterback one day, right? [ It's a joke but it does not lose its earnest tone, its sincerity. Logic of void travel aside, there's a part of Roland that truly believes in Tidus as an athlete, and it just gets stronger and stronger the more they play together. ]
Ready? Get behind me. [ He isn't in position yet, but the ball has stopped its descent, now settled firmly between both his hands. ]
no subject
I'll usually leftfielder, but go on. [ Since we're going to use all these nonsense terms, why not just join in at this point? But Tidus goes to stand somewhere behind Roland, giving him space. ]
So this has something to do with a 'hike'...
[ He says it like a joke, but he really has no clue as to what he's about to witness. What is anyone supposed to do back here--catch the ball as Roland throws it over his shoulder? It's not a water game, so it'd work, probably. You couldn't do it in blitzball, anyway--not enough shooting power, or your teammate would have to be close for it.
It'd be easier just to spin around at that point. ]
no subject
[ He tries to get into position, his body beginning to bend by the hip, but he knows the distance hasn't been closed enough for this to work. So he straightens up and motions for Tidus with a wave of his wrist, beckoning. The ball is nestled momentarily against his opposite arm. ]
Wait. This won't work. Come closer. Back to chest almost.
[ He's saying this with a straight face. ]
no subject
Uhhh-- here? Do I have to be standing straight-?
[ He thinks he gets what Roland means by back to chest, but also...? No, it can't be whatever he's thinking. ]
no subject
[ Tidus, he asks you inwardly not to panic because at this very moment, Roland fully commits to the hike stance, bending while keeping his thighs steady and tight. The ball is gripped in one hand, positioned between his legs.
He turns back, looking to him expectantly. ]
This is basically the hike stance to start the throw. So I need you as quarterback to come catch this ball fast, so if we were playing against a team, I can pass it to you and you can go long without interference. I'd be your shield, keeping the opposing team away from your throw.
So you need to be close. Really close. See?

what is this butt getting up in his crotch ]
5/5
He's watching. He's listening. But he's pretty sure he still doesn't understand. ]
So to do a hike, the person comes behind the one with the ball... and takes it between their legs?
no subject
That's correct. I'll pass you the ball fast, like so - [ Roland does the action slowly for demonstrative purposes, his left arm passing the ball into the gap between parted thighs, as if Tidus was there to catch it already. He does this twice for emphasis. ] - and as soon as you grab it, I'll run to the other end of this lane and try to catch your throw.
Ideally, in a real game, as soon as we put the ball into play, a bunch of well-padded players would rush us and I'd have to push them back so you could throw the ball farther. But since it's just us two...
[ With the explanation out of the way, Roland resumes the stance and the expectation is clearly written on his face now. What else did he need to know? ] Ready?
no subject
You know this is going to look stupid, right? [ There's no way this can't once Tidus thinks he's somewhere that can handle this exchange. And he's got to be ready to make the shot-- er, throw next? ]
Just give me a few slow test grabs first before you run off anywhere. --Wait, wouldn't I be the one running in a real game?
[ Wasn't there something about Roland being a Shield? Ehhh, he'll have to read the ICP info for this some time. ]
no subject
Hey, come on. You're a pro, right? Sometimes you gotta look stupid to get the best play. And this just so happens to be a legal form, so get closer. I can't pass you the ball if I reach my arm out too far. Ok, here's some practice --
[ And Roland begins, just testing out the motion, making sure Tidus's grip gets used to the shape of the football. ]
And yeah, you'd be running too if the opposing team had to throw the ball to center. You'd need to grab it, mid-air if you had to. It's why the gear for pro football is so bulky. It's a contact sport. [ Swing. Pause. Back to place. Swing. Pause. Back to place... ]
