[Video] - Grasshopper Day 13

[If anyone is near the Luggage Car, they might see a trunk suddenly swing open with a loud TWACK, a foot sticking out from kicking it. One very disgruntled Dairine sits up. Grumbling, she brushes herself off and heads straight for the closest ICP.]

Hey, is the mission still on? What did I miss?

[Nita doesn't even bother with the Network; with a deftly-deployed teleport she's just outside the Luggage carriage to greet her sister, in the between-carriage section.]

I'd say 'everything', but that's not exactly right.

Just the mission itself.

[How's them apples, Runt? Not that Nita looks amused enough to say that sort of thing just now.]

[Dairine stares at her big sister in dawning horror.]

You're kidding.

It's over?! How long was I gone!?

The whole week.

[Nita deadpans, as Bobo helpfully pings Spot to affirm the exact time of day on the 5th of Grasshopper that they disappeared.]

The good news is, we stopped the threat we were sent to intercept. The bad news is, we got even less context as to what was up than we normally get here, let alone on errantry.

[But then, that's a given.]

[Dairine flicks open Spot to check the deets.]

Crud.

[She really did miss the whole thing.]

You better have. I'd be extremely cross with the lot of you if you failed without me. [And also beat herself up for not being there to help.] What little context did we get?

The actual threat was something from space, for one. Never identified itself, and the spheres all over the planet produced its 'offspring' every night to attack the natives. They didn't even respond to the Speech!

[Nita shakes her head.]

It got worse as the week went on - by the end of it all teams had to fight the things. Half the teams fought what seemed to be the source of them on the surface, defending the labs; the rest of us went all the way down to where the 'Burrower' was and defended it.

I, uh, might have helped the rocks do some remembering.

[Dair might even recognize that trick.]

[It is a relief to see people come back. Even if he knows it's rather selfish of him. Most people here would prefer to go home.]

Just creepy deserted lab and maybe some monster fighting. Nothing spectacular.

[Is he exaggerating or downplaying? Actually, both.]

I missed the fighting?! Ughhhh...

[What's the point of being stuck on a train for ages if she can't at least wallup some baddies?? This is the worst.]

Did you guys figure out what happened at the lab?

Not that I know of. Sadly. I had to evacuate a bit earlier than everyone else though, I could have missed something.

[Quite uncharacteristically, there's not an ounce of regret present in his voice when he says that.]

What, really? What happened?

[So far most folks had said they'd finished the mission. There hadn't been as much discussion of what problems they faced during it.]

Well, suffice to say someone has no sense of self-preservation. Fortunately, I was there to intervene.

[He is not going to complain about Eva's heroic lunge even to the nicest wizard girl. She did save him. Elves have better eyesight and hearing than humans but even they have their blind spots. Still, he'd prefer she didn't put herself in the harm's way by doing it. ]

That, unfortunately, means I wasn't there to see the end of the mission.

[ Inigo blinks as he spots the video on the ICP, recognizing the person talking. It makes him wander over to the device to reply. ]

Well, what.. is the last thing you remember?

[ He talked with her during the time no one was able to communicate, right? But Dairine is mentioning the mission, so surely she remembers more after that. ]

I just got the mission briefing on my SCA. About a planet called Terra.

[She remembered that part well since that was another name for Earth. Made her wonder if there was some connection.]

I was trying to figure out what team to help out this time.

It seems like you've missed the entire thing then.

[ Maybe.. that's for the best? Dairine seems a little young to go on these missions.

(Not that he's all that much older than her, but sssh.) ]

We all just got back on the train. Don't worry though-- the mission went well.

[Dairine groaaaans. Why bother keeping her on the train if she can't at least do missions. ~~Let her visit other worlds! She's so bored.~~]

Great, just great.

[She's clearly very grumpy about this.]

What happened anyway?

[ Wow, Dairine, you sure don't sound happy for someone who just heard the mission went well! It makes Inigo blink for a moment, confused by her grumping, before deciding to just roll with it for a moment. ]

Well, I'm not too sure what happened at the end. A tunnel opened up and people went down it-- though I'm not sure what they found at the bottom. I stayed higher up to protect the city full of those odd Terran people we found ourselves in.

[Obviously not. She missed all the action!!]

I heard there was a bunch of fighting. What was the city like... before or during the action?

It was rather odd. The entire city was underground.

[ Which is a way Inigo definitely wouldn't want to live, but you know, he isn't going to yuck on other people's jam! ]

And I'd say the technology the people there had was.. advanced, most likely? It's slightly hard to tell, considering most forms of technology are advanced to me. But it certainly was nothing like what I would expect an underground city to be like.

...Did you sleep through the mission?

[ Yes, that's where his mind decides to go when he hears that. ]

What? No!!

[Dairine is offended by this assumption, especially since she's already annoyed..]

I was out of commission!

Huh? Oh!

[ There's a sheepish laugh. Sorrrrry. ]

You got knocked out? Geez! Well don't worry, we got rid of the fiends! All done!

Uh, not quite.

[Has he not noticed people disappearing from time to time? How to explain...]

I had a surprise trip to the control coach.

Uh? Ohhh! [ --for the second time-- ] That! Oh yeah, that happened to a friend of mine too. Right as you were about to get off?

Soon after I got the mission briefing.

[Dairine sighs bitterly.]

If I at least remembered something of it, at least the detour woulda been kinda useful.

Yeah... [ There's an uneasy tone that matches the complicated knit of his brow that's formed. ]

We have no clue what that's about at all, huh? You just get a call, and that's it? It's never been any different for anyone?

Not really. I just got a message that I was needed in the control room, and that was it.

Can't say if it's been the same for everyone.

[Especially since, you know, the memories are lacking.]

[ Man... that's creepy! ]

Well... still all in one piece at least?

I guess.

[Said in the grumpiest tone.]
