video (grasshopper 2): a new council election appears!
[We have two people making a post together today: Nita Callahan and Seto Kaiba. Both look fairly serious.]
Hey, everyone, this is Nita again.
And I'm Seto Kaiba. We come to you today as council representatives. We want to apologize for the delay in dealing with the recent unpleasantness, and we’re working to ensure it doesn’t happen again. But to do that, we’re going to need help.
We’ve lost a lot of people this last week - unfortunately, that includes council members. We do know there was a decision ready before then, but moving forward we’re looking for interest from either runners-up from last time or people new here who are interested now in joining the council.
We have two open slots, and there are no age limits to apply. All we ask is that you make a case for why you want to be part of our civilian leadership. Your duties will be to attend monthly meetings, with the occasional emergency meeting, to listen to your fellow passengers’ needs and advocate for them, to resolve train conflicts, some more...serious than others, and to take criticism for unpopular decisions.
[Nita shoots Kaiba a wry look at the phrasing in the last bit there, but lets it pass and shakes it off, turning back to face the screen.]
If you’re interested in running for council, it’d be most useful to make a post talking about why you see yourself as doing best as a council member; if you want to nominate someone else, just come tell either one of us. Leave me a message in Cabin 4-B-
I’m available in cabin 3-D if that’s more convenient for you. And if you’re nominated by someone else, we’ll ask you whether you want to be on the ballot first. No one’s being drafted against their will here. With that said...good luck to all, and we’ll update you within a few days.

But if you're answering questions now, my first would be: what are your priorities? What issues do you prefer to address, or are you best at addressing?

My current priorities are:
To make sure that those who enter the train who do not have a technological background are given the support they need, such as using the shower, the oven, the washing machines, the store, and other bits of tech that were completely foreign to me when I arrived. I recently got a couple of books from the Train store that I have been reading, trying to gain more insight that I would be happy to share.
Making a database of skills that people are willing to share with everyone. [What, he thinks that some people might hide the fact that in addition to the stuff they tell others, they might also have the ability to basically go nuclear and leave a smoking crater that takes about a century for the plantlife and erosion to cover up...nah!] It would be nice to know who can use a sword, who is better in a support role, etc, so that we aren't just relying on the Train or guessing if a team will need more coverage.
Third...Coming up with a punishment for a crime is not easy. I would like to find a way to promote prevention, so that these discussions of punishment are infrequent. This would involve a lot of people, not just myself, so I've only done a minor bit of thinking on the subject so far.
What issues can I address? I was a Captain of Gondolin and a Lord of one of the Major Houses in my first life. More recently I have been the Captain of the Imladris guard, both in peace and in battle, and a member of Elrond's Council. Both Gondolin and Imladris were in many ways similar to the Train - small, isolated community, sometimes traumatized refugees joining us. We had to deal with integration and mental health as well as finding them a place and way to thrive. What issues do I prefer to address? [he laughs] After a few centuries, even the things you started out not liking...I have no preferences, I will help where needed.
