"No." She shook her head, wrinkling her nose. "Stealing do be being against the will of the gods."

It's the correct thing to say, but it is said as such. Rote. There is no judgement or condemnation in her words.

She is curious though. What had Eva stolen? Had she robbed someone on the train? Why was she worried? Had she been caught? Did she think that figure would punish her?

And that gets a blink or two as she peers at Little One. "Against the..."

Say what? Against the laws of society, maybe, but she's never heard of something like theft being against the will of the gods. Now, paving over the nesting grounds of a god-species like moltres or zapdos or even mew? that was against the will of the gods and a very good way to invite their wrath onto that area.

"Ah. Your people have people-shaped gods, right?"

"People-shaped?" She shook her head with a small frown. "I do no be thinking the gods do be having shapes."

She had never really thought about it. Imagining a god was... It was big. Bigger than her mind could hold. Gods had presence, she had felt it. But shape?

"I do no be thinking they do be looking like people..."

"For a lot of cultures, they seem to look like people," or so she's gathering, at any rate. "And because they're people-shaped, an awful lot of laws seem to come around because it's 'against the will of the gods' and not because having a law like don't steal is beneficial to society as a whole. Which... yeah. Theft isn't exactly something society likes."

She sighs. "Even if that theft did ultimately end up saving my life, what I stole could see me thrown into jail for... a while."

Because her world has no limitations on prosecuting industrial espionage, which is what the theft of the masterball would be classed as, if it's ever worked out she's the one who stole it and not a nameless, now dead Rocket.

She shrugged, will of the gods, will of society. Wasn't that the same thing when gods were those that drove society to be what they were?

She is more interested in what Eva stole. "What did you be stealing? How did you no be getting caught?"

"I stole the prototype of something because I could. Because I wanted it. I knew what it was, how important it was and I still stole it because I could. And then then I lied about it, not just once, but several times."

She's through unrepentant about this. "That it ended up saving my life doesn't excuse it, though."

She nodded, it was good enough for her. Stealing something just because she wanted it. It was a good motive. One fit for a shadow agent even.

She's almost impressed, but that last line... She wrinkled her nose. "Did you be getting caught?"

"No, nothing like that."

There's a pause before Eva shrugs. "You've seen my pokeballs, right? The masterball is like that. Only it can catch any pokemon without fail and had I not stolen it, I'd have died months later."

"Why would you have been dying? Would you have been being killed by a pokemon?"

But she had caught it? With the masterball she had stolen?

"Yes," Eva says as if this were the weather. It's clearly not, if the way her breath hitches and hands fist, but she's good at faking.

"Yes, I would have. It's one of the reasons I don't regret the theft."

She spots that, sees the reaction but isn't quite sure what to do about that and it is clear Eva is trying to hide it... So she will let her.

"I did no be thinking pokemons did be fighting humans. I did be thinking they did be fighting each other."

When humans told them to. Or asked them to, but she's not stupid enough to believe that every pokemon master is as nice as Eva.

There is the briefest of relieved smiles.

And then, just like that, the mantle of 'normal' settles back over Eva. As if she's not hiding a bunch of demons and darkness. As if she's Fine.

She is. She just has to keep putting one foot in front of the other and she'll make it.

"They do and they will. I humanise mine a lot, but at the end of the day, they're animals. Intelligent yet they aren't sapient. And, for all humanities mastered the art of capture, we still live in a world at the mercy of monsters, where one wrong move will see us dead."

Eva's world just got a whole bunch more interesting. Eva just got a whole bunch more interesting. She nodded, "But with that ball. You can just be catching them, before they can be eating you?"

"Yes, but... It's the only one in the world."

Not exactly true; she knows there's several others out there, but she tries not to think too hard about it. "Normally, 'balls don't work like that, though they do come in various strengths."

All the more reason to nab it then, the only one like it in the world...

"How do they usually be working?"

"Well, for one, you have to weaken the pokemon," Eva says matter of factly. "Two, it's not as simple as that. The 'balls can fail for any number of reasons, and also because wild pokemon will almost always flee a battle after a certain point, so you can find a rare pokemon and still fail to catch it because it ran."

And that's not even getting into the tactics poachers or criminals used. "I got lucky because I had the masterball."

"Weaken them? So you do be beating them up first?" She tilted her head, "So you do be needing to be beating them up so they can no be running away, but can still be recovering to be fighting for you?"

Or the balls wouldn't work. Unless its the masterball. "So you could no be beating the pokemon down enough, so it would be eating you? But you did be catching it instead even though you did no be weakening it? It do be sounding that it did be being a good thing that you did be stealing that ball."

"Yeah, pretty much," Eva says with a resigned smile- and then there's a blink as she parses the end.

Excuse her while she boggles just a bit.

"I... I guess?"

"Yes." She nodded, "If you did no be doing so you would be being dead. Then you could..." She paused, thought for a moment. Tried to think like Eva. It was hard. "You could no be helping people. If you did be being dead."

That should get the message home.
