Bassoon Day 6 -- afternoon, video

[ Curufn has been awake for hours and is dressed in his road-crew orange clothing, but he came back for a shower, and he's still in Sleeper Carriage 2:A, speaking from the ICP in the cabin. His hair is not yet combed, and it is still wet and straggles about his forehead. He looks worried. ]

I hesitate to tell you this, but I think it's my responsibility. I had a dream last night, and I don't believe it was just a dream. Let me say that in my home universe, I had visions of evil things occurring, and they always came true. So, I'm sounding a warning, so that we may prepare in any way that we can.

I saw a city in flames. There were people in those burning buildings, and I heard screams. Other people were running, some escaping and some not. The air was choked with smoke.

There were winged creatures flying about this burning city, and I think they must have been demons, as I've seen that sort of creature before. I seemed to be standing quite near a building, as a wounded man came running around it toward me and would have escaped -- except that a small, white-haired, red-eyed being came swiftly behind him and stuck a spear into him. And then it turned on me, and I was about to get into a fight, but I suddenly awakened.

I don't know if many of you come from cultures that credit such visions, but I'm concerned.

[ OOC: This dream was PM'd to me -- to Curufin, I mean -- by the voidtreckermods last night, so you can bet it means something! XD ]

[He hasn't tried to reach out with his mind to his father or brothers here yet, but now seems the right time. It's not more than a couple minutes since the broadcast when Curufin will feel the gentle nudge of minds.]

I do come from a culture that gives credence to such things. Was that the sum of your vision, Curufin?

[Not that she doubts him in the least. She might not have prophetic visions of her own, but many of the Calamities were foretold; surely these are things that happen.]

[ Uh-oh! His second oldest brother is here with the intent to nurture! XD ]

I hear you. I'll come out; there's hardly any room in here.

[ He pushes the door open and exits his room, and smiles to see Maglor there. It is rather a pleasure to talk mind-to-mind, though any kind of conversation with a relative is wonderful. ]

I see you've come here armed and dangerous. [ He grins and gestures at the towel and hairbrush. ]

Yes, that was the sum of the vision. I wasn't allowed to stay in it long enough to identify all the details. It was just. . . there and gone.

I'm all right, thank you. I didn't eat much breakfast, though. I was too distracted. Maybe I should do something about that.

Affection answers the agreement. Maglor reaches out to tug his brother into a gentle embrace when Curufin comes out. This close, Curufin might just notice the older brother to be wearing a leather glove with metal pieces here and there on his right hand.

And, because he could feel the delight in the mingling of minds, he'll continue in that form of communication.]

'Always! Come, we can get you sorted in the carriage ahead and you can tell me more about this dream.'

[This wasn't good. He didn't know what to make of 'visions' but he knew by now not to take something like that or magic lightly around here.]

What do those usually mean to you? Like do you have any feeling about how far in the future this might be?

You had a future-dream sir? [He is used to memory-dreams but they are of the past not the future. He's never heard of anyone dreaming about the future before!] It sounds really scary though! [Demons and fire and people trapped. It sounds terrible and worrying. Was it something that would come true? He really hopes not!]

[Curufin and Reigen are roommates, so of course he's going to notice the other man's sleeping habits. It's not like Reigen has the best sleeping patterns himself.]

Sounds like a lousy dream. Does everything usually happen exactly like how your dreams play out?

Curufin returns the embrace gratefully. His eyes catch sight of the interesting leather glove on Maglor's hand. ]

They walk through the carriages until they reach the Standard Coach, where there is space to sit down, not to mention to get one's hair combed and talk about prophetic dreams! ]

Want to sit here? [ He indicates a seat. ] Where'd the glove come from? Nice work!

He sits down and grins at the hairbrush, allowing Maglor to make a start at untangling the snarls. He launches into the subject of discussion. I've had visions from time to time, all of my life, as you know. Remember when I used to have fire dreams when I was a child, and then again in those years before the Dagor Bragollach? Fire was the harbinger of doom for Celegorm and I in the Pass of Aglon, and for you in Maglor's Gap. And this dream of last night had the flavor of reality, except it was set in a different sort of world.

[ He doesn't mind! Putting on the hero voice is a strategy known to him because he does it himself at times. ]

In fact, he chuckles. ]

Too much to hope it was a nightmare induced by. . . salmonella. [ PUN! ]

Visions are common in my original world. Not all Elves have the gift of foresight or the visionary bent, but most of us do. I'm really worried about this.

[ Good for Tony! Magic and visionary events are too often warnings or otherwise not to be taken lightly. ]

When a vision is sent to me, or a premonition, it usually means trouble. Time to get moving and see about any kind of preparation possible. And no, I don't know how far in the future this event might be. The dream did not clue me as to that.

I'm not one to refrain from participating, and those people in that city are going to need help. We haven't got much in the way of firefighting equipment. I wish I had all the gear I had in my last world. I was a firefighter in that one. We built all our own equipment. We had three fire engines, that is, one ladder truck and two tanker trucks. A pumping station at the river so we could roar back and fill up every time we emptied a tank. Fire-resistant masks and suits, and enough hose to tie the city up in a bow! Shovels, picks, and chainsaws, for fighting fires in the forest or the fields. We don't have any of that here.

Yes, I did! You're right, it was really scary.

[ Curufin certainly experiences memory dreams, and some of those are pretty dire. He's not pleased to have a vision of the future, and have it be a vision of danger. He also worries about the children here. It is hard to protect kids, though very necessary. What if this even happens and the children are involved? Not good. ]

It certainly was a lousy dream. Not everything I dream comes true, but some dreams are obviously visions, and those kind always have come true.

Yes, I have. I've always had prophetic dreams and visions, and sometimes just premonitions. I used to dream of fire, and fire proceeded to destroy the home my third-eldest brother and I shared, and my son. Fire and a vast army of Orcs. We had to gather our people and run for our lives.

This is why this dream makes me nervous. My heart warns me that it is the prophetic kind.

[They sit sideways with Maglor behind Curufin, and he drapes the towel over his younger brother's shoulders after giving the wet strands a rub down.]

'Tony made it for me. Surprised me with it earlier. It helps me grip things longer than without.' [The shy awe in his voice echos gently in Curufin's mind at the answer as Maglor gently gets to work on untangling his brother's hair and coaxing it to a tamer style. He hums quietly, just a silly little tune.

Humming and mind-speech at the same time, and brushing hair, is not much of a challenge, but all are soothing. There's the sense of agreement as he listens, he remembers this brother's talent with Foresight.]

'This time we know to listen. I only wish I'd come armed with more than just my harp. Did you have a sense of when?'

[ Curufin feels like purring. He is so independent and so used to taking care of himself, but it is very nice to feel cared for. Especially by a brother. ]

I've met Tony. I knew he was very intelligent and a good administrator, but I didn't know he was a craftsman as well. [ The echoes in his mind -- Maglor's emotions and the quiet mind-speech -- soothe him as well. And the soft humming is equally soothing. Also, it is always a pleasure to listen to Maglor making music, even in this very simple way. ]

Yes, this time we pay attention. I don't have any of my weapons either, though I can probably use some of my tools for that. And you can too, if you want to borrow something. No, I didn't get any sense of when.

Yes, I smell a fish all right! [ Not his best, either, but fish jokes are always good. ]

I think it means we're going to that city, and it's going to start burning, either before or after we arrive. And those demonic figures are probably real, too. Prophetic dreams are mostly literal.

If we go to a city, yes, we'd better be careful. But if there's a fire or a battle, I'm honor-bound to try to protect people. I was a firefighter in my last world, and I've always been a warrior.
