Can't be a wizard without a hat

I have taken the time to figure out the use of this communication device for two reasons. The first is to show off my hat.

[She has a hat on. It's a wide brimmed pointy hat that looks exactly like the kind of hat a wizard would wear. She looks quite pleased to have it.]

I suppose a hat isn't that important in the grand scheme of things, but I like this hat, and having ANYTHING from home is something of a luxury, given our current situation.

Anyways the other thing I wanted to talk about isn't quite so trivial. I'm curious about magic.

I have spent the last few years devoted to unlocking magic's mysteries, you see, and I THOUGHT I was making good headway. But now that I'm here, I'm realizing that this is a MUCH more complicated subject than I thought it was. Magic works entirely differently depending on what world you come from. Some worlds don't even HAVE magic in the first place!

So if you know anything about how magic works in your world, I would be interested in comparing notes.

Oh right also. Gladio, if you wanted to try teleportation, now seems like as good a time as any.

As you may have surmised, I have a similar situation in my home, where a small upper class of sorcerers rules over all the commoners who had no access to magic.

UNfortunately for them, that's in the past tense! I have figured out a way for someone with the magical talent of a TURNIP to cast spells just as well as any sorcerer, so long as she has the brains to understand it!

Put simply, magic reacts to living things regardless of whether or not they have magical talent. Sorcerers draw it into their bodies which are just wired right to be able to channel that power into spells. I don't have that wiring, but I have developed a method where through precise incantations and rituals, I can manipulate that same power without ever drawing it into my body!

It's a skill, not a birthright! You can't learn to be a sorcerer, but you CAN learn to be a wizard just like you can learn to be a carpenter or stonemason!

I call people with this skill wizards. I don't know if the term exists in your world.

Wait--you can use magecraft and you don't have Magic Circuits?!

I don't even know what Magic Circuits are!

I-it's exactly what you just described, though--you say a mage's body is 'wired right', and for us the Magic Circuits are the wires. Kind of like the name suggests. The more someone has, the more powerful of a mage they are. Having none at all makes using magecraft impossible.

Hm. I never thought about it like that. If I'm following you, then, I guess you could say that Wizardry is making magic circuits without a person to attach them to.

That kind of thing's beyond crazy for us. I can't even begin to explain how impossible it'd be.

Well I guess I'm pretty incredible, then. I could try to show you how to do it, but I don't know if your worlds' magic would be compatible with mine.

Oh, sorry--my name's Waver Velvet. I'm only a third-generation mage, so I'm not particularly skilled or remarkable. My specialty is in alchemy, but I know a little basic healing.

Does third generation mean that your grandparents were the first mages in your family?

Exactly right--my grandmother picked up a little magecraft, and my mother practiced it kind of casually. I'm the first one to study it all that seriously.
