I'd like to know who here has combat training, and who would like it. Given that our missions often tend to involve self-defense at a minimum, so far, we should plan to train. Also, I'd like to know if we have any gaps to be filled in our teams so we can make preparations.

I'm already offering some classes in pugilism and martial arts, I'd be glad to expand those.

Is it something that certain races have, or does everyone have access to it where you are from?

Everyone has it. It's rare, and dangerous, not to possess aether currents flowing through your body. Our very essence, our souls, are aether.

It sounds a little similar to something that we have back home, but it is not something that I am able to use.

I'd be very surprised if you couldn't. But actually using aether, for any purpose, takes training and study, of course.

As do most things.

Not as much as you would think, though. Especially if you use ambient aether as well, like thaumaturges do. Then it's a matter of refining your skills.

Are thaumaturges another race?

No, not at all. There isn't any profession outside of the reach of the spoken races. I even had a little training in it.

It is slightly different where I come from. There are some paths that only certain individuals may follow.

Yes. There are certain techniques that can be trained in my galaxy, but others no amount of training will allow you to wield it. It cares not for your social status, your gender or even your race.

Hm. [Dread bows his head, folding his arms to think about this.] The Garleans are unable to use magic, but they have their own advantages to make up for it...

So long as one understands their limits, and I do. I am far better with words than I will ever be with blaster or blade.

All of them are needed at one time or another. Though some are easier to practice than others!

Time to practice is something that we do seem to have a fair amount of.

Training dummies for fists and spells are lots easier to come across than those for words, though.

Perhaps, but I have seen some who are quite skilled in their fighting.

That's the sort of thing you never really want to show off, though...

Nonetheless. I'd far rather never have to show off how hard I can punch. It'd be a better star -- stars, rather, if those skills weren't needed.

I think a lot of problems could be solved before they went to something bigger, if people could only talk to each other.

Many, yes. Not all.

[Some differences are simply irreconcilable. That truth is painful and unfortunate, but unavoidable.]
