Tribulation 2 [Video]
[ On the screen is Death Incarnate, cheeks taking on a faint golden blush. Thanatos looks like he'd rather be doing anything else besides making this post. Mort sits on his shoulder and eats a cookie in tiny bites. While an animate plush mouse, there is something smug about Mort's expression. He knows what he did, and he is proud of it. ]
The dining carriage is set with a number of baked goods. Please help yourself and don't let them go to waste. You can even take some to save for later.
[ After what happened in the Void earlier and the reunion of some from the platform, extra treats aren't so bad... Thanatos supposes. Mort had a good idea for boosting moral and reducing stress. Still, he wishes Mort had talked to him first before deciding to order a crate of baked goods costing 150 points....
Thanatos will be found in the dinning carriage writing in his notebook while Mort rides around on the mini-chariot Idia made him, eats snacks, and tries to make Thanatos eat some as well. ]

[ At least that doesn't sound full on sarcastic. It probably would have if Alice were talking to anyone else, but she's got enough of a soft spot for Thanatos that there's no way she's going to be that harsh to him.
.. though she still can't help but call him out on that last part, indeed. ]
There is a difference between not needing to eat and not wanting to eat. Do they not look appetizing to you?
[ While waiting for the god's answer, Alice makes sure to lean down so she can give Mort some gentle pats while he's waiting for them and not zooming off yet. It's because he's being a good bean and not bonking into her this time. Good job, little friend! Nice chariot!! ]

... They do, though I have little to compare them with.
[ Mort leans into the pets. He is much better behaved now that he's not under the influence of dubious candy. Also, he still very pleased that he managed to make the order and got such great results. Alice, please help him make Thanatos eat a baked good! He likes them. He really does! ]

Especially since she can tell by his reaction that Thanatos probably does want to have one, but that he must have some reason or another to be denying himself it - in very typical Thanatos fashion, judging by everything she's seen from him before.
So Alice moves over until she can grab a seat next to the other. ]
Well, if you do not want to take one for yourself.. How about we share one then, hm?
[ She's not going to relent here, Thanatos! One way or another, you will have some of this!
And so will Alice herself, honestly, because it does really look good. ]
no subject
And he's never been one for "earthly delights." He's a Chthonic God who, until recently, always put his duty above all else, above his own personhood. ]
... You won't take no for an answer, will you?
[ Wearing Thanatos down and making him give in is a sure way to get him to cooperate. ]
Tsch. Fine. I'll have a small piece.
[ Mort squeaks in protest. A big piece! Thanatos needs to have a big piece! Multiple big pieces! ]
no subject
It's exactly why she grabs one of the food items on display, but rather than cutting off a tiny piece for him like he's asking, she's just summoning her own knife and cutting it clean in two pieces.
Two equal pieces, of course. And she's putting one half on a plate and shoving it over to Thanatos.
Not taking no for an answer, alright. ]
There's so much here that I don't think half of one will-- [ 'kill you', she'd usually say, but that might be a little more awkward given what.. Thanatos is.. ] --hurt.
[ Better. ]
Besides, Mort sounds like he will bully me in awful ways if I don't part with half of this and give it to you.
[ Please, Alice and Mort are definitely on the same side here. But it's a convenient excuse, isn't it? ]
no subject
Thanatos takes a seat next to Alice and looks at the plate before him. ]
So... what exactly is this?
[ He knows it's some sort of baked good, probably sweet, but he's never had anything like it before. ]
no subject
[ Alice pauses.
She was actually about to dig into her own food here, fork already stuck in the sweetness, but she doesn't even have time to lift it. Instead she just turns her head to look at Thanatos, looking as half-surprised and half-sceptical as one can be. ]
.. you are not joking, are you?
[ Does he really not know.
Has he.. never tasted this before..? ]
no subject
No. You know what my world is like. Things like this are rare for the mortals on the surface and the gods of the Underworld. Maybe they were more common before Lady Demeter cast the world under eternal winter. But not now.
[ Mort crawls closer to the plate and tries to push it closer to Thanatos with his tiny paws. ]

[ Because once they go home - and Alice still fiercely believes that, refusing to imagine she'll be stuck on this train forever, especially since they seem to be making some progress now - Thanatos may not have the chance to try this again.
She stands up, grabbing another fork for Thanatos, and putting it down in front of him. Just so he doesn't have to eat with his hands like a brute. ]
These are called muffins. [ Does it feel weird to explain that?
Sure. But Alice is rolling with it. This feels like the sort of thing she'd have to explain to someone in Wonderland at some point.. so she's kind of used to it. ]
These ones over here have blueberries in them, and these other ones chunks of chocolate. So their flavours are quite different.
no subject
These are also muffins? They seem different than the ones others have tried to give me.
[ These ones are fancier, somehow. Maybe it has to do with them not being made on a moving train. Either way, Thanatos hasn't had any. Something has always come up, or he refused. ]
Are blueberries your favorite type?
[ Or did Alice pick this one for some other reason? Thanatos takes his fork and cuts his half the muffin into a bite-sized piece. Two of them as Thanatos still thinks that he'll be sharing it with the bean mouse. ]

It's a world Alice also hasn't often explored. Not since she was very young, after all. Baked goods weren't exactly on the menu back in the asylum, and even once she got out of there, it's not like it was easy to get anything like this out on the backstreets of London either.. So don't mind the girl if she starts digging into one of them, visibly enjoying the taste.
It makes her face seem a little younger for once, since all the frowning and the sour attitude sure doesn't do wonders for her looks. Alice is much cuter when she actually smiles, and she is kind of smiling while eating this.
And being polite, since she swallows the bite before she speaks up again. ]
I like all kinds.
[ Growing up the way she did has not left her very picky. Not when it comes to this. ]
Though blueberries are nice. They make me think of Wonderland. There were a lot of forests there too, with all sorts of mysterious things growing there.
no subject
He smiles faintly. This is nice... maybe he is allowed to enjoy things like this. From time to time. And because there is just so much of it. ]
From what I saw... [ During those illusions they shared. ] ... Wonderland had a lot of different things growing in all sorts of colors.
[ He takes another bite. Mort seems pleased by this and goes to nab some other snack to try. Thanatos can have the whole half. ]
What other kinds of muffins are you familiar with?
no subject
[ It's always an important distinction to Alice to make. After all, she basically has two worlds - though only one of them ever felt truly hers, compared to the way she almost felt invasive in London, like the world was actively trying to push her out, considering her an enemy.
Still, she asks it very calmly. Maybe it's since the mood is so light here. Just two friends sitting there, eating muffins together.
Thanatos giving himself something to enjoy for once. ]
Or in Wonderland?
no subject
Wonderland. I think I'm more familiar with that than London.
[ Or the illusionary version he briefly glimpsed. "London" had been a mix of his own terrors and hers. No muffins there. ]
no subject
Instead she can just look back on the nice memories. ]
Oh, I have grown familiar with plentiful kinds of muffins there. They truly have anything over in Wonderland.
[ Much more so than in London to begin with. ]
Especially since they had never-ending tea parties there. So there just was tea and accompanying snacks at any hour of the day, because time was eternally stuck at tea time for some people there. [ She says it so casually too, like this is just.. normal..
On the other hand, she's explaining it to a god of death of all things, which isn't exactly the most normal people to converse with either, so maybe it makes relative sense that she'd be so calm about it. You just accept Wonderland logic after a while, and that in turn makes everything here on the train much less strange too. ]
Finally found a way to not make this an emo tag
How did they find time for anything else? Someone must have been constantly cooking and brewing tea at all hours.
[ Thanatos pauses, an odd thought lodging itself in his head. ]
... I sympathize with that person.
[ Mort scampers off to get a small cookie to place on Thanatos's plate. He eyes Alice. Make Thanatos keep trying things! ]
no subject
[ After all, it's not like Alice has seen a whole lot of cooks in Wonderland. Just one, and-- well, that one really didn't seem to be cooking much at all, really. More like they were just throwing pepper all around.. ]
And I do mean that in a literal sense. [ She adds, gently nudging the cookie Mort put on Thanatos' plate closer towards the other. ] Nothing quite made sense in Wonderland, after all, so that meant absolutely anything was possible in that place.
[ Even feasts appearing out of thin air.
Sorry to break your sense of the logical world like this, Thanatos. ]
no subject
Thanatos's brows knit together as he tries to make sense of it all. It's clear that he's failing too. Mort seems to smirk at Alice helping him out and goes to look for another yummy snack to introduce to Thanatos. ]
I think I would find myself incredibly frustrated in that world.
[ He likes things to make some amount of sense. He looks down at his plate.... He was certain he was about to have an empty plate. ]
