Forward-dated to after Gwen Vanishes

{ ICP Station in the Dressing Room. }

[ The feed snaps on to show Peter, his hair's actually combed and he's actually wearing his polo. One might even say he looks nice. ]

Uh... Gwen? It's been like uh... an hour-ish and I haven't uh... you coming? We were gonna meet in the Lavender Death Room right? Or the Gym? I mean I checked the gym but you weren't there either.

oh.. and uh in case anyone's alarmed-the Lavender Death Room doesn't smell like Lavender anymore-it actually smells really good. Like really, really good.

Uh... anyways... um... Gwen? Just call me back, please?

[ He cuts the feed. ]

{ In Person about three hours later. }

[ Peter's still sitting in the room he was supposed to have his sort of date with Gwen. He's given up looking for her for now and is now just laying on the ground, staring at the ceiling and trying hard not to think about the fact she could be gone. ]

[ Why does he let himself keep getting attached to people when his luck always finds a way to tear them away. His parents, His uncle and though it wasn't in the same way- He lost Liz due to her dad being a literal super villain, and then now Gwen. Why does this keep happening? ]

[ He lets out a sigh and covers his face in his hands. There's nothing to suggest anything's happened to her-maybe she's just... hiding somewhere. He thinks he might prefer being stood up to losing yet another person he's gotten close to. ]

[He could? That was impressive. He already had super sensitive senses and the ability to tell if something was approaching. He didn't really need the awareness part of the emptiness.

But he really needed the rest of it.]

Even if you can already be hearing and seeing better it will be helping you to know be going leaky faced or talking really fast or being scared when your arm do be needing to be being sewn up.

[She shrugged.] But if you do be being scared you do no be needing to be learning it.

[She had only been trying to help.]

[ Peter just watches her for a moment, still very concerned about this method-'the emptiness' as she'd called it. Maybe he should tell Mr Stark about this? But what could he do? He's an engineer, not a therapist. ]

[ He sucks in a breath, trying decide exactly how to word this. ]

It's not that I don't appreciate you trying to help me-'cause I do. I really appreciate it-and you might be right-your thing does sound different than mine-but it also sounds dangerously close to dissociation. And the problem is, if I start doing it on purpose then I might start doing it by accident again-and I can't.

I can't tell you exactly what happened that made me start uh dissociating-but it was bad. Really bad and it-uh.. it's the reason I don't sleep very well and it happened when I was your age-well a year younger-but I've made progress since then. A lot of progress, I think. I mean I talk to people now-so that's something.

Anyways, I can't risk losing that progress. I'm-I'm trying to get better. I don't know that I ever will-but I'm trying.

[She drops the emptiness. It is exhausting to keep it up for a long time and it seems like Peter doesn't want to learn it and so there is no point being in it any longer.

He's scared he might get ill. Well. She guesses if he has this illness that might be a good point but she frowns as he continues. Something really bad happened when he was littler than her and he's still sad about it now? You could still be sad and scared about things for that long?

She has been hoping this ache in her chest will go away, if she just endures but his words make her worry. Then again she is well trained, brave and strong and he is... He is leaky faced and panicky and talks too much.]

You probably will no never be if it has been being so long already. [She shrugged.] You do be needing to be finding another way to no be being so leaky faced then. It do be being alright to be feeling scared and sad but you should no be showing it. Do no ever be showing people because then they can be using it to be hurting you more. I do no even be knowing how you do no already be knowing this.

Yeah... [ He admits, taking in a breath and feeling his eyes starting to sting again. ] You might be right. There are a lot of people that never fully recover so there's that to consider.

[ he sucks in a breath and rubs at his eyes with his index finger and thumb. ] But I have to keep trying. There's nothing else I can do so I just... gotta keep going.

[ But he's not gonna go into anymore about that-he can't without freaking out and she's too little to know about that kind of evil in the world. ]

Well, back home-as Spider-Man, I wear a mask. To hide my identity, yeah. But it's also to keep my enemies from seeing how scared I am. [ He admits. ] But you're not my enemy, you're my friend. So I'm okay with it-if you see me cry-I don't like it because I'm sixteen and you're eleven and then I feel like the baby-but I'm not gonna put on a brave face and pretend like everything's okay unless I absolutely have to-I wasn't brought up that way.

[She's still not sure that's how friends work. They haven't known each other very long at all and she's pretty sure it takes more to be friends. But she's not going to argue. As annoying as it is it is probably better is so open with her. It gives her an advantage.

But he admits her wears a mask to hide his fear. It sounds stupid but then she supposes the emptiness is sort of a mask.]

The voice did be saying that the mountain did be being a practice. So soon we will be going on a real mission and there will be enemies probably. We do be needing to be making you a mask.

[ He just laughs and nods at her statement. She's probably right-there's going to be enemies along the way-enemies a lot tougher than the bitey goats. ]

Yeah, probably. [ He sighs and then runs his hands through his hair. ] Man, I've done nothing but screw up since I got here. I mean, I screw up a lot back home but damn-uh-dang.

You have been. [She nodded, agreeing whole heartedly.] But you do be still breathing and Kant do be saying that as long as you do keeping trying, keeping fighting until you do be breathing your last then it do no be being that big of a failure. The real failure do be giving up.

[She doesn't even know why she is giving him advice. But he's just so... Terrible at everything that she can't help but try and pass on what she knows and help him to be better.]

Yeah. [ Peter can't help but agree with that one. ] Just keep going and keep trying-that's about all you can do sometimes. Unfortunately for me, screwing up just seems to be part of being a teenager.

[ Then again, he also has Parkerluck so it's even worse for him. He shakes the thought out of his head. ]

My uncle used to always tell me that with great power comes great responsibility-if you can do something to help others then you have a moral obligation to do those things. [ He sighs. ]

I didn't really understand what he meant until later though.

[That's a very light addled thing to do. She knows now that he was indeed a light god follower, or whatever the equivalent in Peter's world was.]

Kant do be saying lots of things that I do no be understanding but he do be saying I will be when I do be growing more. Do you be understanding your uncles words now?

Yeah...

[ Peter nods gently, unable to help thinking about that night he made a terrible choice. ]

Basically, it means that if you can help someone then you should because you might be the only one that does. And there was a night-back when I first got my powers that I could have done something to help someone but I didn't because it wasn't my job and then... a few nights later my house gets broken into and Ben...

[ He pauses a second to rub at his face. ]

It was the same burglar. If I had just done the right thing that night I'd still have my uncle and May would still have her husband. What happened was my fault-I could have stopped it but I didn't.

So now, I stop bad things from happening to other people-as Spider-Man.

[So he hadn't done his job and someone had died. She nodded. That was what happened. If you didn't do your job it was bad, they might be on different sides but if he was a hero of the light then he needed to fight for the light. He couldn't just say it and not do it. It was good he had learned that lesson.]

Now you do be knowing. [She nodded.]

Priestess Lightning did be getting masks when we did be being on the mountain. They do be looking like the stupid fur monsters but they might be working until you can be finding something else.

[ Wow, thanks for the sympathy there, Buttercup. He doesn't say anything though and lets it slide because she's an eleven year old little girl-not a therapist. ]

Nah, we won't be facing the same kind of badguys I do back home-at least not the kind I gotta hide my expression from.

[ He shakes it off. ]

The last really big badguy I took down was stealing alien tech and using it build weapons to criminals. He also ended up being my date's dad so, that was awkward.

How do you be even knowing that? [She raised an eyebrow. She had no idea what "bad" guys they would be facing, if any. So they might be just the same. They might also be stealing alien tech and using it to build weapons...]

What do alien tech be being? And what do a date be being?

[ Oh right. Problem words for a world that probably hasn't even been to space. ]

It's um... well- Alien in most cases just means something foreign or not from the area. But in my world-and probably quite a few others-it's also used to describe anything not from Earth. Tech is just short for technology.

[ And how do you explain a date to someone? ]

And a date is-uh... well I was supposed to take Liz-my date-to a dance. A date is when you hang out with someone that you really, really like in a way that's more than just being friends.

[So people from a different land or planet or world.] So we do all be being aliens because we do be being from different worlds to each other? [Checking that she understood that right. She already knew technology, that was weird stuff that wasn't magic but should be, like the train.

Date is harder. A date is a person but also a time when you hang out with people? Who you liked? But more than friends?] So you did be hanging out with Liz and dancing and you did no be being her friend but... more than her friend. Do there be being different levels of being friends?

[ He pauses to think about her first question. ]

Yeah... I mean... technically, yeah. I guess we would be.

[ He shrugs and then thinks a little more on how to answer the question about different levels of friendships. ]

So... that's not really what I meant, but yeah. Yeah, there's like a casual friend-which is someone you're on friendly terms with but not super close, then you have good friends who you're close to, and then you have like best friends that you tell everything too-My Best friend's name is Ned-he's awesome-You'd like him-he can be really funny.

But other than that uh.. more than friends is uh... means you like someone-like. Like , like-uh... like romantically like someone. He swallows. ] L-like I like Gwen. She-she's my girlfriend now-or was. I don't-whatever-I just really like her.

[Maybe she should take notes. Not that she's not smart enough to remember it but who knew there was so many levels to friendship. Casual, good friends and best friends. Could you only have one of those?

But more than friends meant romance? Oh. Fair enough. She wonders why he hadn't just said that when she had asked about what a date was.

Yeah, I mean it was kinda sudden-but I really like her, you know? She's really fun and awesome and caring and really pretty and I just-

[ Wait. ]

[ Did she just ask what he thinks she just asked? ]

[ she sure did. ]

[ His cheeks immediately turn a bright-bright red that continues to his ears and looks positively panicked. ]

Wh-what!? Marry her?

I mean-I don't know! We just met kinda? I mean she's awesome and is like-well she's Gwen-but I don't-!

I'm only sixteen!

[His faces were funny. She's not sure why he is making them but they are funny to watch.

Oh he was surprised that they should marry. Surely they should if they were in love.]

Sixteen do be being old enough to be marrying. You should be. [She raised an eyebrow at him. Unless he planned on leaving her heartbroken and alone, that's how it worked. At least if you believed tavern talk.]

[ His face somehow manages to get even redder and he just hangs in his head in defeat. Although, that doesn't mean he's agreeing to getting married. ]

Uh actually eight-teen is the legal age to get married where I'm from-but even then I mean-I don't even know that she'd want to-that's not saying I'm thinking about it-cause I'm not.

I mean we haven't even kissed?? I'm not-it's way too soon for that! Besides, I got like stuff to work out before I can even-[ And why is he telling all this to an eleven year old girl? ]

I don't wanna get married right now!

[She laughs, it's not a cruel laugh though more just enjoying his flustering and blushing. Because he and Gwen are probably a good partnership. Not that she really knows much about it.][Gwen's gone anyways. That's probably why he is so sad about it.]
