Never have I ever made a fool of myself [video, nebula 17]

What's up, party people?

[ And here's a cheerful wave from a man in orange, seated in his room with a mug of...something. ]

If we haven't met yet, my name's Jake. Jake Peralta, your clues guy. I'm down to poke things with sticks and solve mysteries! Sooner we figure out what the train's entire deal is, where we're going and all that, the better, right? But in the meantime, I thought it'd be fun to get to know my new squad!

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone would be down to play a little Earth game called Never Have I Ever. How it works is you say something totally cool, or weird, or boring that you haven't done. And anybody who has done it has to take a drink. Unfortunately, I'm as broke here as I was back home, so I can't supply the booze. And we should probably be setting a good example, right?

So just drink whatever you have! Be that water, juice, milk, coffee...or if you happen to have a proper adult beverage on you, go ahead and drink responsibly. You ready? Great, I'll start: never have I ever gone skydiving!

((ooc: it's a big mingle format! Go ahead and add new 'never have I ever' statements as new toplevels, and threadhop all you want.))

No. Well my biological parents didn't, but Byakuya was the best.

[ The remark is off-hand and almost like an aside with how little it sounds like it matters to him. It doesn't. He doesn't consider them to be anything to him. ]

I'm not a believer in the afterlife. I think this is all we get, no matter how long mine has been.

I...

[ He thinks a moment, of more than one late night conversation with Gen about the topic. ]

I think he knew anyway.

Oh, I see. This Byakuya was a sort of stand-in parent to you?

I am a believer in the afterlife, seeing as how I experienced it after I died in my own world. But not all worlds are the same, and not all belief systems are the same. If you really believe this is all we get, then it's all the more important to try to repay debts when you can, if that is at all possible.

Your father knew your feelings even though you never told him in words?

No. He was my dad. He adopted me, but that distinction doesn't mean it's less real.

[ He doesn't really know much about his biological parents, he never wanted to know. It was unimportant. ]

Probably. He was much better at reading my feelings than I was at having them so I mean...yeah, probably. Not my kind of conversation anyway. [ He misses him, it's still a gaping hole in his life, one that can't be fixed, but it hurts a little less as time passes. ]

Indeed. An adopted son is a real son.

Your father seems a very intuitive sort. That might have been a very good thing, if you weren't apt to express feelings or even to have them with ease. [ A missing parent can indeed leave a gaping hole in one's life, which fortunately does hurt less as time goes by. ]

Intuitive, yeah, and really embarrassing. Ugh. He wrote some of my childhood antics into his stories that got passed down for generations. He embarrassed me from beyond the grave.

[ He's just the best. ]

He was a writer? Uh-oh, and your childhood antics were fair game. Generations of embarrassment! Whoa.

What a pain right? He was a professor, before he was an astronaut, and the stories were set up mainly to educate. What plants to avoid, what creatures would kill you, that sort of thing.

He just happened to include anecdotes from my childhood to torture me when someday I would hear the stories.

Funny, how that man was a combination of intelligence, kindness and meanness.
