Early Kazoo 2
[An hour or two after today's morning announcement, the ICPs light up again, this time showing Devero's face. He made himself fairly scarce yesterday-- he had a new toy to play with!!-- so newcomers, you may not have seen him around. (If you had, you'd probably recognize the distinctive device that he wears on his face.) He's wearing it now as he looks earnestly into the ICP camera. From the background, he's obviously in his cabin.]
Hello, folks, a moment of your time, if you please! I promise to be a lot less annoying than Glowstick was last night.
First, for you new passengers, my name's Devero. Unfortunately, that's not what it says on the passenger roster, but please don't try to call me by that string of numbers and letters. That's my ID code, but it's not my name.
Second. [He holds up a compact little brick-looking thing in one hand, showing it for a moment before he takes it and opens it up into a futuristic-looking tablet.] I'm donating this to the library. It's a course to teach yourself sign language-- well, GSL, the sign language where I come from. [He sets down the tablet, steps back far enough from the ICP that he's visible from the waist up, and as he speaks the next part, he signs it too.] We have a few folks on the train who would benefit from more people knowing it, so if you want to learn, come find this in the library. [He stops signing and gets closer to the screen again.]
I'm going to try to be in the library for lessons or anyone who wants to practice on certain days too. I'll put it up on that board in standard when I have a set time nailed down.
Third, in case you hadn't heard: Cassie's hosting a ballroom social tomorrow in the evening. You can ask her for the details; I just wanted to say that after I'm done here I'm going to park myself in the gym for a few hours. You want to brush up on your ballroom, or learn some steps so you can do a turn on the dance floor with your blind date? I've got you covered.
Oh, one last thing. [He turns and reaches out of the picture, then draws his hand back into the frame. Hovering above it is a vaguely loaf-shaped metal thing with a big camera lens in front and a purple ribbon tassel hanging off the antenna on the back.] This is my new Mantiscope. It's a kind of robot pet from my world, and it's completely harmless. [He makes a gesture in the air with his free hand, and the floating loaf extends its neck and its legs, dropping lightly to his palm. It swivels its elongate head and focuses its lens-eye on his face. That little antenna on the back end pivots up and down, making the tassel wave.] It's new, so it should stick by me since I'm its user. If you see it on its own anywhere, will you let me know so I can come collect it? I'd appreciate it.
Okay, that's all I've got. Thanks for your time. I'll head down to the gym shortly, but let me know if you have any questions while I'm still here.

[ Alice may actually be leaning in here - her face looking comically large on the screen as she's trying to get the best look possible at the little thing. Someone sure is excited, especially by Alice's usual standards. ]
What sort of things can it learn? Does it copy what it sees from other people? [ Kind of like a human baby. ]

He addresses it--] Look there. [--and points past its head at Alice on the screen. Its camera-eye tracks the motion of his finger all the way around until it's looking right at her.

Oh, it can learn all kinds of things. To identify and find objects; to film things for its owner; tricks like you might teach a dog. It's a really flexible software platform, especially if you don't pre-load it with any specific programming.

Sorry, did Devero say something at all there? Something about software, or programming, or-- well, other things that are far beyond Alice's own technological understanding. It doesn't matter, it's all background noise to just watching the little thing move. That's all the amusement she needs. ]
You prefer this over an actual dog to teach tricks, then?
[ Alice could see why. Not that certain dogs can't be cute too - she guesses, since she's more of a cat person herself - but this tiny thing is just adorable too. ]

Let me put it this way: I can't just shut down a dog if I don't have time to spend with it. But this thing, I can put into standby mode if I have something else going on in my life, and it won't effect it any.
Plus, what dog can do this? [He makes a short scooping gesture with both hands; the drone lifts into the air, folding up into its cam configuration and hovering in front of the screen.]

Alice still feels a little unsure. It doesn't feel good to her, but then again, Devero knows a whole lot more about this stuff than she does.
And when it comes down to it.. she trusts him, right? Or she wants to, at the very least. So Alice slowly nods. ]
Okay. If you say so. [ There's a pause, and then she decided to move on to something that feels more important to her than doubting him: ] .. Can I see it in person sometime soon?
