From what I understand about mental connections now, it's unlikely it operates on the same invisible waves...but it's a good analogy. Being connected like that lets you send and receive signals, those signals being whatever it is you share between you. I can sort of tell where Eva is, for example, if we're close enough, and I can feel how she's feeling when we're in the same proximity too.

So. I think the train is fine with communication as long as it's among us. I do think, very specifically, the train does not want us to be able to communicate with anyone outside the train.

I can't speculate as to why, exactly, except that the train wants to keep us here against our wills, for its objective to save worlds in danger, nevermind how dangerous some of our own worlds are and which ones need saving.
