[The feed opens up with... a far-too-close zoom-in on Enna's eye. But then once she's satisfied it's on, she leans back, and nods to herself.]

Hello! So, Vee did that game where everyone got to ask it three questions. And I thought it seemed kinda fun. It would be a fun way to get to know everyone here. So I think it should be a game for everyone to play.

If you can do this.... Caw, ICP? Thingy. And talk to people. Let people ask you three questions and use it to get to know people! And even if you're the kind of person who doesn't care about getting to know people, it's still worth trying, because if we're all on teams and going on missions together, the more we know about each other, the better we can work together. Tactics, battle strategy, abilities, knowledge, strengths and weaknesses... And things like personality, history, all of that. The more we know about each other, the better we'll be.

Ready? I'll start!

[god forbid he dissuade someone who gave half a damn about learning]

Alchemy in my own world is the study and manipulation of the flow of matter. The field I focus on is thaumaturgy; essentially 'chemistry with a hell of a lot more steps', or the closest approximation to the alchemy of myth and legend. Though the line between fiction and reality kind of blurs there; Paracelsus von Hohenheim himself was a real living mage of the Clock Tower.

The point is, it's essentially chemistry with a bit more to it. Chemical reactions can be enhanced with the introduction of magical energy, and that same factor's introduction can reshape components or even make them react in a way an ordinary scientist couldn't. Pyrite, for example--it's a highly explosive alchemical component, while the worst a normal chemical reaction will get out of it is arsenic and corrosive gases.

Ah, that is interesting. And that requires this magic genetics to do?

[ He's curious about that. ]

How do you know if someone has those genetics? Can you see it in their bloodwork?

Magic Circuits, correct. I don't really know how they're tested for or counted, that's way out of my department.

[this is never explained and i do not know why.]

They probably wouldn't show up in basic bloodwork, though. Circuits are like a nervous system for the mage's soul; however many they're born with is the number they have for life. A mage can engrave what amounts to a number of Circuits and stored spells into what we call a Magic Crest, essentially the inheritance of any mage family. What this means is on top of having the genetic predisposition for magic, the heirs of older families tend towards being the more powerful mages in concept.

But in short, one needs some number of Circuits to be able to channel magical energy. Just like any other nerves or electrical system; can't send something if the conduit isn't there.

[ He considers that for a moment, like a nervous system for magic, that's a good analogy, he can follow that. ]

Could I look at your blood anyway, just to see?

[ He asks, as though that's not a strange question. ]

I understand how your Circuits work, I think. Interesting. It's allowing you to change the chemical reactions into something more, even a little more volatile maybe? Are they all like that?

...I'll think about it. Just because you can't measure my capacity with blood doesn't mean it's the same as a normal person's. Any mage's blood carries their natural magic energy in it.

[He'd been asked stranger questions.]

Magic Circuits are Magic Circuits; they all operate the same way regardless of the mage's specialty. We all have affinities to one or more of the five elements, however: my predecessor held a dual wind and water affinity, and mine is earth. That gave him an edge with the energy and movement of liquid elements, while mine puts my own specialties in grounding, cultivation, and embedding of energy. And since 'energy' is the core component to any chemical reaction, that makes an earth affinity ideal for someone specializing in thaumaturgy-based alchemy.

All the more interesting! [ That's not a derterrent. ] You're welcome to observe me of course, I have a microscope I just wanted to see what it was like compared to mine which is rather ordinary blood as far as humans go.

[ He hums. ] I just looked at mine compared to someone else's. Mine's very ordinary. Bit of a high white blood count, but that's to be expected with my recent allergic reaction.

[ He may have gone off on a mild tangent. ]

Anyway. That makes sense. Most people specialize in science too, after all, they like to know as much about their chosen field as possible. I just chose many fields.

You know, I'm not sure. I imagine it at least looks the same under scrutiny, it's not as if the magic itself is something tangible.

[A shrug.]

There are people who can use all five elements, but they're exceedingly rare. Usually mages are more than powerful enough with one or two.

It could. [ He agrees, he's not sure, only one way to find out. He can think about it though. ]

Ah, it wasn't about power though, it's just because I can't stop asking questions and if I don't know the answers, I need to know.

[ He probably sounds compulsive. He kind of is. ]

Are there books about your magic I could read?
fionnuisce: (your name's all it knows)

[personal profile] fionnuisce 2020-12-15 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
...Yeah, I know the feeling. I hate not knowing things, it's irritating. Taking something apart and examining it from all angles is the only way to advance, sometimes.

Either way--there's plenty, the Clock Tower has an entire massive library. But that's all back home. I don't have any with me right now.
10billionpercent: (Huh?)

Yeah, I kind of used to work in strange spideweb kind of pattern and I just absorbed subjects as I started learning more based on something else. I'm an autodidact mostly. If something came up I could focus on a subject, which it has a few times, but...

[ He kind of ran wild as a kid in his learning pattern. ]

Could you give me a couple of titles? I could try to order them, as an experiment!
