You'd have to shove a lot of sheer energy into the spell to make any alternate route viable, I'll tell you that outright.
[When dealing with large bodies, the amount of force you were trying to offset was necessarily greater.]
Technology could be viable, too - depends on how big the falling object is, though.
... And we likely won't find out if the world has any functioning technology for shielding until we get there.
