Space debris. The only time I've been in space, ever, was during that mission to fight the Empire of Stars. But that at least gives me some perspective. I suppose that if there was enough destruction near enough to a planet, then a huge amount of space junk could fall into that planet's orbit and come down to wreck havoc.
Or conversely, it could be a natural occurrence. If a very large meteor fell, it could light the atmosphere with dark fire as it descended, and then it could ignite the forests and everything else.
