Science being the study of everything around us always affects people, but it's also an unending puzzle, which is why I enjoy it so much. My world was the kind of place that developed science fairly well, with steady progress, albeit probably not as much as you're used to, I'd guess.

Or not, perhaps, it's hard to say without more information about where you're from. Some of that knowledge was come by very unethically. Not interested in the kind of thing that hurts people. At least for now, the way I see it the void is already hurting us and has displaced us from our lives. There's only so much it can do to me at this point, so I may as well try and solve the mystery.
