Some idiots fooling around with a an illegal branch of magic called 'Sundering'; that's why people from other worlds who were brought to that world- the Tenscore Kingdoms- were called 'Sundered' by the locals. Basically Sundering's a sort of summoning/space manipulating magic that tends to be dangerous and unstable, hence why it was illegal.
