video | poi one, afternoon

Hey, Idia! Anyone who knows how to technology in a smart way.

( Here's Jingyi, holding up an e-reader turned toward the ICP camera. One can read that it says, "CONNECT TO PRINT." He has no idea what to do with that, can understand what it functionally does, but: )

How do you get this to do the thing where it can make physical copies of the stuff we were sent over by Ten-Nank?

[As typical for Idia he's in the Lab when that call goes out, head down and working on one of his new tools he's creating. It takes a moment before he registers first that the com had gone off around the train, but also that his name had been attached to it.

...Then jumping at that realization and having to struggle to catch the part of the device he was working on. What?! Don't just call him out like that! To everyone! Still in that panic, he drops what he's doing and rushes over to the ICP.]
Don't just call me out like that! [He fumbling with the buttons, meaning to hit the voice response, as he always would, but getting the video instead.

Give him a moment, Jingyi, he'll be able to help you after that.]

[It seems to help, Idia letting out a long sigh before his head drops from view for a moment, his hair still visible as there's a 'thud thud' sounds off camera, before he lifted his head again. Possibly a bit of a red spot from where he had just banged his forehead against the edge of the ICP is in view under his hair.] No, no, it's fine. [It doesn't look like it's fine from his expression, but it was, or at least for right now.

Enough that Idia gets to the topic at hand.]
What did you want to know?

[Eyeing it up from the other side of the screen, Idia seems rather bored at that question, then a little confused about why anyone would want a paper copy to read, but hey, whatever.] You'll need to print it off on a printer. Assuming there is one of those on the train. [Idia has no clue as he wouldn't even bother to use one.

Wait, he recalled having to explain stuff a bit more old school than he would normally, since Jingyi was from a different time.]
A printer is like an automated printing press. [Was that... early enough for him? Idia's not sure.] Do you know what a printing press is? [Whatever.] Ah, you will need either a suitable cord to connect them, or use a wireless network, depending what the printer and ereader has as options, and that's even if they would recognize each other. [So much for keeping it simple.]

[ Is Inigo still Tired after all the information that was thrown their way?

Sure. But this message intrigues him at least a little, so he bothers to reply despite not being in the addressed category - though making sure to filter the message so it only connects to the ICP Jingyi is using. Inigo is in no mood to talk to the entire train right now, let alone about this stuff. ]

Jingyi? .. What did you want to do with it?

I'm pretty sure you could say 'newfangled' instead of 'lazy.'

[ See, he's trying to be newfangled about it and.. somehow turn the message into paper. Like Inigo knows how this works, he's not here to be the technology expert Jingyi is asking for. ]

I just read it on here.. [ Though he did just read it once and then planned to never look at it again, given how it makes his stomach turn, so it's not like he minded the small screen, BUT STILL-- ] Is it easier to read it on paper?

Hm, [Idia needs a moment to think if he's spotted one. He's pretty much searched the train for useful items, ones most won't notice missing.] I... think there was one in the Standard Car. [He doesn't really care around printers. Why would you need to print something out when you can have it on an electronic device? Now a 3D printer, that was useful.

Also, how to explain this?]
For them to speak to each other you will either need a certain cable that can fit to each device and that will transfer the information, or there may be settings that the ereader can still speak to the printer without having physical contact with it. I would have to look at it. [Idia finished up, not realizing he more or less just volunteered himself to do just that. He was more meaning he would need to see both to give a correct answer. It'll be a surprise to him if pointed out...]

[ Hold on.

Yes, Jingyi is making a very decent point there. But just hold on for a second. ]

What's so odd about saying newfangled?! It's a very common term where I come from!

[ Apparently the dramatics are still here, even when Inigo's mood is low. ]

[... he did just volunteer for that, didn't he? UGHHHH, fine, he guesses he can. He supposes he should take a break for a snack and drink or something as well, and to stretch a bit.] I'll be there shortly. [However it's delivered as a sigh.] I'll meet you there.

[Give him some time to clean up enough of his stuff to keep it out of others who are working in the Lab, and for Idia to wander his way down the train, before appearing in the Standard Car, looking around for Jingyi.]

Wha-- Anything could be newfangled!

[ Inigo sounds so offended while sputtering. Like he's now defending this word just for the sake of.. what? His own world's pride? Who knows. ]

I can't believe your world doesn't have a word like that! What else do you call it when one of your friends attempts to invent something that seems totally unnecessary? [ Thanks, Laurent. ] You call it newfangled!
flatteries: (everyone's scared someone knows)

[personal profile] flatteries 2022-01-16 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
...

Who would call it 'not traditional'.. That's such a strange way of putting it.

[ Says the guy who just got overly offended about someone else finding a word strange. Talk about the kettle and the pot. ]

I can't believe people like us from non-newfangled worlds can't even stick together on a point like this, Jingyi. How are we ever supposed to keep up with all those other people then? [ Tidus is going to waltz all over them at this rate! ]

[Now that's a level of frustration about technology Idia can understand. Even with all his understanding in it, sometimes things still just happen and go wrong, and when it kept happening it was easy to lose your cool about it. A 0 or 1 in the wrong place could cause everything to come to a stop.

As Jingyi approaches him with the tablet, he looks over to see what he can only assume is an error box popping up.]
Ah, I see. It's like... [How to explain it... hmm.] It's like... if you were expecting a message that needed a password to receive it, and the password does not match. [That makes sense, right? Or close enough.

Idia reaches out to take the ereader, poking away at it.]
I'll adjust the settings so you won't have to worry about it having issues interacting with the printer again. [Unless there was a patch. Was that even possible here? An ability to update the technology? Idia's not sure, he hasn't noticed anyone talking about it yet, and he guesses unless someone actively did update either the ereader or the printer it would not be needed. Which in itself could be an issue in future if it happened... Though if Idia is given a suitable computer to work on, he could certainly program something to work with the devices.]
