[Man, she'd hoped she could just write this or something, but evidently she's not that lucky. But it's fine, she can deal with just voice.]
I have... a question, I suppose. Or a hypothetical may be more appropriate. Say that someone is... unaccustomed to particular mannerisms between people beyond the surface level. And you are someone that if you interfere their heels would dig in more and make things worse.
Let us say, as well, that you fear they will become an impenetrable fortress and that just will not do. And you are trying to help with something they are unaccustomed to and not remotely trained in.
How would you go about this particular situation? [Only like one person will know the reason for this if they read everything properly. But she's quietly hoping that someone else will not.]

What mannerisms are we talking about, exactly? I would say it's difficult to give particular advise without a few more details in there.

It may well depend on how the person deals with the situation. Perhaps the priority should be in easing them into comfort, and you may find it easier to get there if you ask them.
